Rent KBanger1 [series:3117#1694]
From this point on, I will only give my reviews and not the rating system as the base for my final verdict. I will use the Overall rating as my final but with a one adjustment. Avoid/Watch/Buy will still remain what they are. Rent is a different story in which I will aptly use it as more of a either download to your hard drive or keep on your queue if you have any of the streaming services that show a particular title. That way if you tire of it you can always delete it. Now on to my review.

Shomin Sample is about a high schooler named Kimito Kagurazaka. Nothing special about him to another person but he was 'chosen' to be an example of what common folk are to an all-girl academy. Needless to say that he's more than common to these ladies. The students who attend are primarily daughters of the elite in Japan (and possibly all over the world) and are there to further not only their education but also their social status amongst their peers. This is where Kimito comes into service. He basically show how commoners live outside the elite's way of life. None of these girls have interacted with the commoner world and most if not all have not interacted with the opposite gender for most of their lives. You can imagine how any girl in an all-girl academy would react to this kind of stimuli.

The story itself is interesting because it explores the 2 different kinds of people: the elite and the commoner. While the first episode gives the plot for the entire series, it's the interaction that makes this fun to watch. Although, some of the dubbed dialogue here shows a disparity between what was originally in the Japanese script to modern day English slang which to me relates more to a younger generation. Even though this show is 5 years old, the dialogue has changed a lot. Since English slang usually is determined by how often it's used, most of the slang in here is quite dated. Almost to the point if you watch it and find something confusing (which I have a couple times) it's readily understandable.

The characters in this title are quite colorful in their own right. Besides Kimito, you have Aika (a student who doesn't act as the other students but is more of a free thinking girl), Reiko (a very popular student amongst her peers and faculty), Hakua (a child prodigy who's genius has made her a recluse to others), and Karen (a sword-wielding student who values bushido as a way of life). Now all these girls seem humdrum but each of them has some serious issues. Aika can't get along with anyone because of her stand-offish attitude and the fact her gullibility makes her an easy target. Karen who carries a sword everyday lives the way of a warrior and when I say that I mean it. Hakua is a one who when she comes up with something on the now, for some reason she strips naked and writes whatever is on her mind. The only character who has a sense of normalcy is Reika. She pretty much perfect in every way and it shows when she's in class or not. Probably the only thing that makes her off is that she is too perfect and tends to have an answer to everything. That's just a small summary of what these girls are but when you put all of them together it makes for hilarious situations everytime. For me, the harem level on here is quite high so I get a kick out the situations that Kimito is put in.

I give this a 'rent' for anyone looking for a situational comedy like anime. It's good for your occasional laughs but also has an ok story to boot. For harem collectors, it's a 'buy' off the bat. Story-wise, it's not too heavy and more light-hearted as a series. The harem factor is certainly one to watch especially when getting Kimito's attention. Overall, Shomin Sample is solid anime with enough in it to keep you watching till the end.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3117#628]
(One episode watched):

'Hey, now here's an idea' I said to myself as the first scene of Shomin Sample ran. A school for girls who are so pampered and detached from everyday life that ordinary people seem like creatures from another planet to them. The potential for a clever comedy seemed endless. Then, giving it a second thought, I asked myself 'I wonder how they'll screw it up'? The easiest way: it was not particularly funny (these girls have never even heard of a cellphone?). It was pretty predictable, too; nothing surprised me. Normally I write down the names of principal characters so that I won't forget them, but that seemed unnecessary here. This show had the usual, lame 2D characters instead of imaginative ones--the black-haired, sword wielding girl, the lolicon girl, the naïve blonde, and the rambunctious red-hair. Fanservice was light but the preview of episode two suggested that there would be more of it later. Perhaps they're not taking the odd premise seriously enough; being abducted is a serious matter that real people wouldn't just shrug off. I think I would enjoy the show much more if an effort were made to make the odd story at least slightly plausible. Like, not resorting to lame nonsense like the 'muscle fetish' to explain why Kimito was selected as the commoner example. And yet I wish the show had been just a little worse, because then I could drop it without fear of making a mistake. But Shomin Sample had a few good touches; the length Reiko went to to return Kimito's borrowed cellphone was sort of amusing. This would probably wind up as a 'Watch' show in the mind of the average anime viewer, but I haven't got the time or patience for those sort of shows anymore.
