(Seven episodes watched):

This is an odd show about an odd topic; I'll never be convinced that UMAs of the sort depicted here really exist, but episode one of the show managed to modestly interest me nevertheless, as I wondered what Professor Banba would do about such a strange problem. Three students of his (I think) discover a fantastical creature in episode one, or maybe I should say that it discovers them with ugly results. The fact that episodes are only around seven minutes long meant I didn't learn much from this one, so I was left feeling that this might still be anything from clever and engaging to a total bust. Most striking was the strange manner of animation, which seems like something halfway between photographing paper cutouts against a backdrop and conventional anime. I was expecting episode two to expand on what had happened in episode one, namely the mysterious disappearance of several boys. But no, it took off on a new tangent, namely yet another completely different UMA incident. The only character the two had in common was a brief appearance by the Professor. No expansion on him, either; like, how did he get interested in UMAs? Has he ever seen one himself? Will the entire series be nothing more than short stories about different UMAs? I would like some sort of ongoing plot. It turns out that the series is indeed basically short stories about UMAs. The stories are kind of interesting, but don't seem to have enough time to seriously expand on whatever new premise they establish; like, in episode four what was the deal with the missing girl showing up in an x-ray the professor produced? At the end, you feel that there are too many unanswered questions still around. Will the individual stories ever come together? If not (which is my feeling) why was Professor Banba included at all? I became increasingly frustrated. The short stories by themselves are just unanswered mysteries when I want some sort of explanation and closure. I felt little or no confidence that anything more than this will ever happen, so I gave up. Considering how unimpressed I was, I was surprised to learn that a second season of the show has been produced as well. Somebody must be enjoying it.
