As far as mech titles go, Comet Lucifer is as cookie-cutter as you can get. Our lead Sogo protecting a mysterious girl with powers named Felia from a mysterious military faction is nothing new as far as premises go and the series seems unconcerned with following a proper grasp of logic considering the shallow motives of some characters, a number of illogical decisions being made, and major plot developments seeming to happen just for the sake of lazy convenience. In spite of the visuals for this being pleasing on the eyes with nicely-drawn scenery and well-animated mecha fights, substance leaves much to be desired with Comet Lucifer and I would be hard-pressed to recommend any viewing of it with how poorly thought out its plot was.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3098#628]
(One episode watched):

This shows seems to be a member of a genre that is fairly common but hasn't had a name assigned to it: shows with flashy technology, evil and oppressive organizations, a not-too-distant future setting, introduction via a confusing monologue which only makes the series as a whole more difficult to understand, a plucky male protagonist who gets dragged into a conspiracy and tries to put things right, a semi supernatural girl, and, most typical of all, uninteresting, undeveloped cardboard characters which the viewer cannot care a whole lot about. I could repeat my usual complaints about how all the special effects in the world are useless if I don't even give a damn about the characters, but I have already done that countless times so it would be pretty boring (maybe most people have more patience than I do about characters developing personalities, and are prepared to wait until episode two to see if it happens). This show, and the others of the proto-genre, just seem to have no idea what sort of stuff would be required to pique the interest of viewers like me. Instead of the usual complaints, today I'll ask myself a question: If episode one had already been made, and had to be used in the finished anime, but I was given control of the making of Comet Lucifer from this point onwards, what would I do to try to salvage the show? I guess what would be needed would be for one or more extremely unexpected things to happen, to yank the rug out from under the viewer and assure him/her that this isn't going to be another highly predictable show of the cursed genre. Maybe something as extreme as to make Sogo the villain rather than the hero; or at least make him a flawed hero rather than a goody-twoshoes one. Maybe make Kaon snap out of the dimwit mode she seems to be in, and show a little intelligence. Or make that arrogant guy she has been engaged to against her wishes into someone who isn't all that bad and has understandable reasons for his flaws. Basically, don't allow this to be just another good guys versus bad ones show. Also, get rid of the absurd ability characters have to survive without a scratch spills with ought to have killed them instantly. But I'm not in charge here, and there's little reason to believe that Comet Lucifer will shape up. It seems to be that the only chance this show has is that the fairy-like girl who appears at the end of the episode will have something truly interesting about her, but based on how interesting the characters so far have been, I won't be holding my breath. I ultimately decided that there was no point to watching any more of CL.
