Focused on the developing bond between our titular female lead Shirayuki and the growing bond she has with a prince named Zen, Snow White with the Red Hair focuses on the differences that the two have in their personal lives with Shirayuki desiring to become a court pharmacist for Zen's kingdom and Zen dealing with the responsibilities that come with his royal lineage. The series is typical shoujo to a good extent with a number of its plot developments with the two starting to fall one another and facing resistance from those opposing their developing bond due to their differing social statuses, often leading to Zen having to come to Shirayuki's aid to deal with hostilities. However, both our leads do get a good deal of fleshing out as Shirayuki isn't the type to play the meek damsel-in-distress as she will take matters in her own hands if confronted with anyone trying to be an obstacle in her bond with Zen or eyeing her as a prize due to her rare red hair color and focus on Zen involves dealing with his royal lineage and strained relationship with his older brother. Other characters get their focus to explore their connections with Zen and what they think of his developing bond with Shirayuki. The series isn't really groundbreaking with what it offers up as things are rather predictable with where the bond between our two leads will go, but it offers enough fleshing out of its cast to make it an enjoyable watch for those that like shoujo romance anime.

Well, this show did have a sort of Snow White feel to it, with a pretty, pure girl who is harassed by a corrupt ruler and finds her salvation with a good Prince. I also couldn't help feeling that the story seemed to be over after just one episode, and I have little idea where it will go from here. It seems sort of like a fairly tale rather than a complex story, and I couldn't get excited about it. Perhaps none of the characters was given enough personality for me to really care how things would work out. There was nothing about it that grated on me, however. I considered watching another episode to see if a more sophisticated plot would take off from here, but ultimately didn't. If episode one of a show doesn't excite me, is unlikely that any number of additional ones will. Last updated Tuesday, January 12 2016. Created Sunday, July 12 2015. |
