A surprisingly decent short, which is surprising considering Gonzo's track record for hit and miss anime quality. Ryo depicts the titular young samurai befriending the infamous Ryoma Sakamoto, an influential figure in Japan's final years under Tokugawa shogunate rule as he was a major figure in opposing the shogunate, desired to turn Japan into a democracy and bringing peace to Japan's Choshu and Satsuma provinces. In its short run, this movie skips around between different points in time to explore the tragic upbringing of Ryo who loses his parents while young, is adopted and trained into a samurai by the shogunate and befriends Ryoma as he becomes enamored of the man's desires for Japan's future. At least from my perspective, the movie has enough time to develop Ryo and Ryoma to have you become convinced of their bond being genuine and caring for the beliefs they come to gain from seeing Japan's feudal era. The short won't be for everyone as the history of Ryoma Sakamoto will be lost on those not as familiar with Japanese history and the short ends abruptly as a final fight appears to be breaking out between Ryo and an enemy threat. Still if you're craving a quick title to look into and enjoy Japanese historical titles, Ryo is a decent time killer to check out.
