Denki-gai is what you get when you dabble into slice-of-life comedy with otaku running a manga shop. For the most part, I was rather indifferent to the show's comedy as Denki-gai's characters all get their tropes to fulfill related to whatever aspect of the otaku fandom they have interest in and the show plays up some romantic tensions developing with several of the characters that work in the shop. I'd only recommend this if slice-of-life comedies mixed with otaku themes strike your interest.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2976#628]
(One episode watched):

Well, shows with otaku themes generally can count on me watching them no matter what, but Denki managed to be remarkably unremarkable. It seemed to be the usual gags--the mangaka struggling against a deadline, the seemingly unemotional person who's actually a fanatical fan, the girl with boy-phobia, etc,--being pitched to us yet again rather than anything fresh and original. I watched it several days ago but couldn't think of anything noteworthy about it at the time. It just feels like a generic show about the manga business which will use generic characters; they have strange habits, but they are strange habits which we've seen before, and no attempt has been made (so far) to flesh them out. I have no reason to believe that any sort of interesting longterm plot or character development will come about. This seems like a shame, since, like I said, otaku themes usually strike a chord with me. At least this show doesn't seem to rely on fanservice, IIRC. I watched the first skit of episode two, but again it was painfully hollow--the jokes were hardly funny enough to make me smile, much less laugh, and the story was uninteresting (I have to struggle to remember it less than 24 hours later). With lots of stiff competition for my free time coming from numerous Fall series that have shown more signs of entertainment value, the odds did not favor Denki, and indeed I quickly dropped it.
