'This has got to be a Go Nagai project' was one thought which occurred to me as I watched the first few minutes of Daimidaler. The situation which would be any horny male teenager's wildest dream come true, the shameless ecchi, the jaw-droppingly suggestive jokes, the character designs--everything pointed that way. The problem is, I wasn't sure if this was genuinely funny or just crass and vulgar. That is, some parts are genuinely funny--LOL funny--and others are most certainly not just lewd but disturbing. Perversion isn't funny, and I couldn't help feeling sorry for the girls who were obliged to service Kouichi and Daimidaler. It has gone beyond being suggestive in a sly and witty way and become abusive and degrading to the female characters. Maybe this happened when physical contact took place (Kouichi eagerly fondling Kyoko's breasts). This disturbing stuff cancels out a good deal of the less offensive humor of the show. Daimidaler seems like more of a masturbation aid than a clever tease about what a boy might be able to do some day, which would have been infinitely better. I mean, wouldn't it have worked better if a modest boy who wouldn't dream of groping a girl found himself forced to do so? As a result, the show as a whole seems to sit right on the line that seperates stuff I'd want to watch from stuff I wouldn't. The ecchi is disturbing but the non-ecchi parts are fun. One thing which we have learned over the years is that Go Nagai does not give a damn what anybody else thinks of his works. He gleefully bursts through the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in anime and reaches as far as possible beyond them. But that may not always be a good idea.

When you decide whether you like a show or not, usually the different parts of it give you more-or-less the same message: good, bad, or average. It's unlikely for a show which has excellent character designs, for instance, to have abysmal music. But Daimidaler is one show where different parts of the show give me wildly different impressions and as a result it's hard to average things out and draw a conclusion on the show as a whole. But while watching episode two I felt that the bad points of the show did me more harm than the good parts benefited me. The vulgar humor canceled out the non-vulgar humor, and then some. As a result, I think I will abandon Daimidaler. It's always easier to appeal to eroticism than it is to write genuinely funny jokes, and even though it had some good points Daimidaler couldn't resist the temptation to take the easy way out. Will there ever be an anime which dares to address the limitless potential for humor in sex, but refuses to accept this free but negative handout of guaranteed popularity?
