If time did not allow ordinary things to be ordinary. How would you have lived?

It is the Bakamatsu and early Meiji Period. Akizuki Keiichirou and Kusaka Touma stand of opposite sides of the political scale of the time but still, something as fragile as the shell of a cicada binds these two men together in a tragic and cruel fate. A story of friendship, love and seperation as well as reunion and sacrifice.

I'm feeling a mix of being suckered and thinking this is wasted potential. Fuyu no Semi focuses on two swordsman of opposing sides in the years leading up to the Meiji era belonging to the Tokugawa shogunate and the Meiji rebels, with the two connecting with one another and having similar mentalities on their thoughts of a new era for Japan. Had the series focused on just the two being friends forced to choose between loyalty to their clans and leaders or their friendship and ideals, this could have made for an interesting and unique historical drama. Instead, this series makes them into a yaoi pairing with the exaggerated dramatics typical of the genre and lack of proper buildup or reasoning to even justify the two being a romantic pairing. Outside of a few explicit sex scenes, this baby then has the gall to have a tragic ending involving the two out of some half-brained idea that I should care for society trying to tear them apart. But I was more dumbfounded by the moment than caring for it. The only reasons I don't bother giving this an Avoid rating are the solid first episode before the two became lovey-dovey and seemingly had a connection through ideals, as well as the anime's believable depiction of the hostilities, tensions and changes taking place from the closing years of the Tokugawa shogunate to the early years of the Meiji Restoration. Otherwise unless you're a sap for the yaoi genre, I wouldn't even want to watch this more than once.
