Minami-ke in its focus on the interactions between the Minami sisters and their classmates which are sometimes mundane and other times rather bizarre. It's about on par with the quality of Minami-ke Okaeri as the humor is still pretty hit-or-miss as I had moments that were gut-bustingly funny for me and others where I was feeling indifferent, with a good number of the laughs for the series normally coming from Hosaka and the chemistry between Kana and Chiaki. One plus I would give this season is that Takeru and Hitomi's characters do get more screen time here and are involved in more of Minami-ke's comedy, an improvement compared to how underutilized they were from Okaeri. If you've enjoyed prior comedic offerings from anime seasons of Minami-ke, you're likely to get similar enjoyment out of this fourth TV season to the series.

Minami-ke isn't dead yet! I guess the quickest summary of Minami-ke in general (and Tadaima seems just the same) is that it takes a very laid-back approach to comedy and as a result is more amusing than outright funny (there were no LOL jokes in episode one for me). "Please don't expect too much from it" one of the girls tells us at beginning of each episode. The problem is that viewers may feel that what they are getting in exchange for 23-odd minutes of their time isn't the best bargain they could get. I find it hard to imagine watching an episode a second time. But the show must be doing something right, or else it wouldn't have had so many incarnations. There's the guy who dresses as a girl, because he likes the youngest sister but she doesn't like boys; and the girl who dresses as a guy, because she's a tomboy and would rather hang out with boys. All sorts of odd relationships have developed over the previous seasons, and are carried on here. Six episodes later, all I can say is that that's about all I can think of to say. Amusing, but little or no long term plot or character development. Last updated Friday, March 08 2013. Created Sunday, January 13 2013. |
