(Watch-/ Avoid+) Symphogear's largely a cliche storm that feels specially made to appeal to the otaku crowd with its plot about high school girls using the Power of Song to transform into magical girls to combat a monstrous threat. The series has the subtlety and nuance of a brick dabbling into melodramatic trappings with the characters having their typical types and going to emotional hysterics to express their thoughts on their personal problems. The plot developments get sloppy fairly often with the sudden revelation of some changes in direction and characters conveniently gaining power-ups or being saved in the nick of time in hostile situations. The show's aesthetics are fairly ridiculous having fan servicy shots of its female cast fairly often and getting in the habit of breaking out in song while fighting with whatever reason, while the series expects you to take its story developments seriously in spite of said ridiculousness. Fans of the title's typical cliches may likely feel at home watching this. Anyone else may feel like they're wasting their time dabbling into this. Last updated Wednesday, March 23 2022. (One episode watched): Something about how only music can stop a certain kind of despicable monsters, I guess. A pair of transforming girls take on a variety of weird opponents, ranging from blobs to pterodactyl-like flying things. This didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It seemed kind of cartoony at times. Was it meant for girls, given that all the main characters are female? But if so, why all the swordplay and slaughter? Why did Kanade sacrifice herself to save one girl, when hundreds if not thousands of people were killed or injured? How did such a massacre take place when Kanade and Tsubasa apparently knew ahead of time that something extraordinary was going to happen ('The show tonight will decide the fate of mankind')? Are the 'Noise' frightening and horrible, or are they laughable? It looks like we will have to wait for episode two for answers.
