Another anime to add to my list of "style over substance" titles that blow up in its face for me. In the case of EX-Driver, it has cute girls and nicely animated car chase scenes. But beyond this, it doesn't really have much else to offer making anything beyond the car chase scenes quite bland and dull. There are no ongoing plot or character developments and character interactions come across as rather unconvincing as the main trio of drivers have a stock character type to follow like Lisa as the loud, aggressive and short-fused girl; Lorna being friendly, quiet and reserved; and Soichi being the prodigy driver who does enough to get on Lisa's nerves. They have very little beyond these personalities and it makes you care more for the car chases than their conversations. In addition, the premise for the whole series of people growing reliant on AIs to drive them around in cars while the trio of drivers get to drive their own vehicles is a head-scratcher in itself as the series doesn't really explore why such changes in our society have occurred, no details are given as to how the AI programmed cars go rogue exactly, it makes humanity in the future seem rather lazy to have computers do what humanity has done with automobiles for over a century now and worst of all, it is a blatant and poor excuse for the car chase scenes to take place in every episode of this OAV series. I admit the series looks good with its bright, vivid scenery and good use of animation to create the appearance of fluid movement in the car chase scenes. But without knowing what led up to this near-future world, there's hardly anything to bring me back to watching EX-Driver. Last updated Wednesday, January 26 2011.
