Panty and Stocking appeared to obviously be tailor-made for Western audiences with its sleazy humor, nods to popular Western pop culture franchises, and the art style being a mix of anime and Powerpuff Girls style character designs. The series is divided up into 26 ten to twelve minute episodes combined into 13 TV episodes with our two leads girls either getting into some sort of shenanigans due to the habits they are addicts for (Panty for sex, Stocking for sweets) or the two dispatching whatever demon threat is wrecking havoc on Daten City. Much of the humor for Panty and Stocking isn't normally my thing as the series is awash in sleazy, scatological humor and pop culture references. But at the same time, I do applaud the show's attempts at being different and keeping its jokes diverse to avoid getting repetitive. As said, not much got me giddy for the series though I did some glee out of a Transformers parody episode. Otherwise while I give the show some kudos for its Western-influenced animation and humor, said humor is not really my thing which greatly reduces the likelihood of me wanting to pick up again for a second watch anytime soon.

Unevaluated chibi [series:2392#2380]
Artwork and action reminiscent of Dead Leaves. Occasionally funny, but more often just shocking.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2392#628]
(Three episodes watched):

Oh my God!! This has got to be one of the most kinky, vulgar, unpredictable, wacky shows I have ever seen. It seemed very funny, too--I had tears in my eyes from all the laughing I was doing as I watched. The stylized animation seemed like something you'd see over here on Cartoon Network; but the sleazy, trashy dialogue was the last thing you'd expect there. Panty, especially, has a slutty attitude to her which made my jaw drop. It was all the more strange, since she's an angel, and superheroine, of all things (and don't ask me where she gets her secret weapon from). Stocking is less shameless; the two kind of remind me of Dirty Pair. Apparently they have been cast out of heaven, and are trying to earn redemption by fighting crime in Daten City, which has an American feel to it. Success causes one or more 'Heaven Coins' to drop from the sky, which the girls collect. This first episode consists of two seperate stories, one involving the mystery of "humans being eaten by toilets" (the word 'shit' appears in English), the other about a highspeed chase with a possessed car (the animation was pretty wild, with creative camera angles). I noticed that Gainax was involved, which makes sense. An odd touch was that the pair sort of leave SD mode briefly, and become more realistic, to transform--which they do as if they were performing in a 'Gentleman's Club'. This show is f---ed up, in a good way. It is so high-powered that watching half an episode at a time might be best. I just hope the pleasing shock effect won't wear off over time. Anyway, my favorite fall series so far.

The first half of episode two didn't particularly thrill me, and I quickly concluded that P&S had been all about the shock effect, and that had already worn off. But part two was great fun and just as quickly revived my enthusiasm for this show. The premise is that the girls have starred in a big budget movie, and just before release day Panty lets it slip that she once appeared in a somewhat less reputable film. I laughed a lot; this segment had the same effect as episode one had had.

Some segments are fun and some are just vulgar, like part one of episode three. If they have a 'dirty' feeling to them I'd rather not watch at all. Actually, this show has started to repulse me. I was operating under the impression that each episode would have one vulgar segment followed by one humorous one, but number three had two of the former. It now seems that I have to watch two or three of the gross segments just to get one of the funny ones, and that's a high price to pay. It's kind of sad that something as daring as this, and from a well-known studio, didn't go better. I may quit watching altogether.

My favorite line (so far): "This one's got something white and sticky on it" --Panty
