The Secret World of Arrietty was surprisingly engaging for me considering I haven't been enjoying much of Studio Ghibli's more recent offerings and the film shows that "simple" and "mundane" can work well when applied right. The movie adapts elements and characters from Mary Norton's well-known children's novel series, The Borrowers, and makes them into a story focused around the interactions that Arrietty and the Borrowers have with a boy named Sho. The movie is mostly light in its content as it focuses on the interactions between Sho and Arrietty, as well as any altercations that Arrietty and her family get into with members of Sho's family and any animals or insects they encounter. The characters get enough fleshing out for you to know of who they are in terms of personality and roles and there isn't much in the way of tense moments, outside of altercations with a crow and Sho's family maid. Not to mention as usual, Ghibli's animation quality for the movie is very good with beautifully drawn and detailed scenery and character designs, with nicely animated moments that show off the differences in size between the Borrowers and Sho's human family. It's not as highly fluid and richly detailed as Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away, but the movie is still as well-animated as you would expect from a Ghibli title.

If you're a fan of the Borrowers or Ghibli movies in general, Secret World of Arrietty is a definite keeper.
