Virtual reality. Murder. Werewolves. And teen girls! In a future where nothing is as it seems, can old legends come true? In the near future, humans will communicate almost exclusively through monitors, making real interaction a rarefied and weak occurrence for those living in a near totalitarian society. In this new world of communication, children are only allowed to interact personally on school grounds. So when a serial killer starts slaughtering junior high children the communication routes go under further surveillance. And despite all the safeguards put in place to avoid physical interaction, the killer's latest victim turns out to have been in contact with three young girls: Mio Tsuzki, a certified prodigy; Hatsuki Matsuno, a quiet but opinionated classmate; and Ayumi Kono, her best friend. And as the girls get caught up in trying to quell curiosity under such terrorist scrutiny, Hatsuki learns that there is much more than meets the eye of their monitored communications.

Described as being a theatrical anime film adaptation of the virtual reality werewolf novel: Loups-Garous Kihi Subeki Ōkami. Targeted for release in 2010, this movie calls upon Blood+ director Jun'ichi Fujisaku and the Production I.G. anime team.

The French word Loups-Garous translates to ↗lycanthrope (werewolf) or bogeyman. (LOUP = "wolf", GAROU = "bugbear or an irrational fear"); A translation of the Japanese Kanji would be ("忌避" = "kihi" = "evasion", "すべき" = "subeki" = "should do", "狼" = "Ookami" = "wolf/wolves", might mean "you should evade wolves")

Feel a bit indifferent on this one. Several girls get together to figure out who is responsible for a latest string of murders in their futuristic society where teens are regularly monitored via computers. Essentially, each of the girls fulfill different archetypes you can expect of teenage slice-of-life type shows and they don't really grow out of these personalities much nor do you get to learn much about many of them, save for a shocking twist with one of the girls in the later half of the movie. The movie does create a solid amount of suspense and mystery surrounding who could be involved with the murders, but who is revealed and their reasons for doing so are predictable and quite shallow.

The movie's visuals consist of subdued color tones and a great amount of detail on the city scenery and security robots within the title's futuristic society, as well as moments of fluid animation coming from fights or chase scenes. However, the character designs are on the plain side seeming a bit cartoon-ish and are more simpler in detail compared to the scenery. Music mixes around some haunting and upbeat tracks (the latter includes some energetic J-Pop lyrical tracks) to accompany the movie's suspenseful and light-hearted moments with the girls, but nothing of note stuck out for me and the upbeat tracks felt out-of-place at points for me.

Overall, I found Loups-Garous to be mostly average fare for me. It does solid work with building up suspense in the mystery of its murders, but I couldn't find myself caring for the characters much here thanks to the lack of depth and diversity in personality that they had throughout the title's length. I don't think I'll be rewatching it again anytime soon.
