In a distant future, on a faraway planet called ‘Earth Dash’, a punk boy named DAN rails against the BFB (Big Foot Basketball). Being a true basketball fan, the thought of trying to play the game in 10meter tall power suit (called a Big Foot) is just ludicrous. There is just no way the clumsy machines can move, dribble and dunk that way that he can. But the sudden reappearance of Miyuki, his cute childhood friend, who is now a brilliant Big Foot mechanic gives him a chance to take on the BFB and show them how the game of basketball should really be played.

New anime series set to aire in April '09.

Basquash is mostly spectacle in its focus on basketball-playing mechs as its story and characters are otherwise mostly pretty cliched as far as their personalities and developments go. The basketball mech-action makes for the visual highlight of the series as a good number of the games often result in collateral damage to any game's surroundings and mech action's convincingly fluid, though being rendered in CG animation does make it stick out like a sore thumb compared to the regular visuals. Fans of sports and mecha anime may clamor for this mix of genres. If you've dabbled into enough anime as far as premises go, then this series doesn't break any new ground for story and characters in spite of its unique meshing of genres.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2059#628]
(One episode watched):

Uh... what? Despite all the high-tech CG animation, colorful backgrounds and amusing character designs, I found myself having a hard time maintaining interest in Basquash. Perhaps that's because it wasn't making a whole lot of sense. So, the reason why Dan is "underage but violent", and inflicts heavy property damage on the city in which he lives, is because he hates mecha basketball? Something about his sister being crippled--how was Big Foot Basketball (BFB) responsible for that? Isn't his careless behavior liable to result in other people getting hurt as well? Why should I take his side--isn't he largely a vandal? And how did he survive leaping from a very tall pole--was that a metaphor? I must be getting old, because whereas the intended message must have been hero-raging-against-the-machine, the one I get is troublemaker-who-ought-to-think-twice-about-the-consequences-of-his-actions. For all the frenetic energy, I don't really 'get' this show. There were a few good jokes, however, and the overall quality in many aspects other than the plot makes me reluctant to write Basquash off altogether.

Unevaluated chibi [series:2059#2380]
Saw the first raw, looks very Gainax-like with lots of mecha zaniness. Street ball played with junk-yard mechas and taking on The Man. Lots of CGI, but there's no way they could do the robot action without it, and the backgrounds and characters show lots of good detail work. Music's pretty good, too.
