Gekijouban Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Guren-hen
This is essentially one of two films which basically compresses the events of the Gurren Lagann TV series into two 2-hour films. This movie covers most of the major events involving Simon, Kamina and the Dai-Gurren Brigade's formation and their battles against Lordgenome's forces. The pacing to the movie is a bit on the rushed side where Childhood's End prominently focuses on Simon and Kamina's developments with focus on many of the show's supporting characters being greatly reduced and some events are either rushed through in a montage (the introductions of the Black Siblings and Rossiu, for example) or combined together (the battles with Lordgenome's Four Generals) to rush along the story. While the pacing does limit plot and character exploration, Childhood's End does fortunately retain the over-the-top and manic humor one would love from the TV series thus you still get to see the Dai-Gurren Brigade's reckless and nonsensical actions and the title's homage to the "super robot" genre of mecha anime through its various cliches. The movie also retains the visual quality you would expect from the TV series meaning while it isn't as bad as the TV series, you shouldn't expect it to get any better in quality either for this movie take. Childhood's End is intentionally left open-ended for the second movie, The Lights in the Sky Are Stars. While this movie is still a decent stand-alone title to check out and get you into the second film, you might be better off checking out the TV series if you want some expansion to exploring Gurren Lagann's plot and characters.
