Based on a popular web-released manga series by Hidekazu Himaruya, this has been described as a "cynical gag" story set in Europe in the years between WW1 and WW2 (1915-1939), using exaggerated caricatures of the different nationalities as portrayed by a gaggle of bishōnen boys. For example, the Italia Veneziano character is into pasta and women. The Deutsche (German) bishi loves potatoes and sausages, and Nippon is an otaku boy. Installments of the manga have jumped back and forth in setting from the ancient times to modern-day geopolitics. The manga's title comes the Japanese words for "useless" (hetare) and Italy (Italia).

Best way to describe Hetalia is that it's a ohe-trick pony considering its primary source of comedy is milking the various caricatures of foreign countries and their chemistry with one another during different time periods (with World War II being most focused on). Gag comedies aren't really my thing since they won't appeal to everyone, and your mileage will certainly vary with how well you warm to the series.

A 5-min web released episode? What can one really do or say in five minutes? It is not like this series is Chocolate Underground.

Well, the first episode has a dozen European boys sitting around a round-table talking about important world issues such as 'global warming'. The American boy is trying to lead the forum. The French boy just hates everything American or German. The German boy likes to growl a lot and is into strong discipline. The Russian boy is only interested bullying the Lithuanian boy. And the Italian boy thinks that PASTA is the solution to every problem .......

And then it jumps into CHIBITALIA... which presents itself as an European all in the family - with Papa being the Roman Empire (Wiki), and his kids are the little boys - Italy, the Holy Roman Empire (wiki) and France.

With lots of caricatures and stereotypes, this series panders to the gag-humor of historical global politics - and it mostly WORKS!!!
