The Pros: Comedy is an anime OAV that is notable in the fact that it could create and resolve its story line in just under ten minutes. The plot and characters are simple enough to follow and do not get complex enough where events feel forced or the plot felt compressed. The story is simple enough to follow as a young woman recalls her journey to save her village from an attack from the English. There are only two characters explored within this short amount of time: the girl who made the journey and the mysterious Black Swordsman. The Black Swordsman made for an interesting mysterious anti-hero as he would seem to be quite the bibliophile when the OAV first introduces him. But, there is a darker side to the swordsman that one will see when he takes part in battle. Animation wise, Comedy featured dark, vibrant animation which went well with the mysterious environment of the Demon’s Castle, the character of the Black Swordsman, and the evil of the English soldiers about to invade the village. The OAV’s only battle scene was fluid and slick, especially the character designs of the English army. The classical music used throughout Comedy meshed quite well with the anime’s dark environment.

The Cons: The only complaint that could be said about Comedy is that it could have been at least a minute or two longer to elaborate a little more on a couple plot elements, such as the Black Swordsman’s love for books or the girl’s journey to the Demon’s Castle. Otherwise, there are no other flaws to be found in this short OAV.
