Update (6 ep. watched): Once the novelty of the storytelling in ep. 1 wore off, there wasn't much left to keep me interested in the series. Later on it gets even more "japanesy" and reminds me of Basilisk and other such animes. It's a high watch/low rent.

Well, so far so good. Can't really say anything about the story since I have watched only the 1st episode. But the story was not difficult to follow as Stretch suggests. The only thing is that it just doesn't make sense :) Nice beautiful animation without being anything exceptional, several stills (and I hate stills) and even one semi SD scene. The music is also nice, actually pretty good BUT I got this feeling as if the music was too imposing, trying to lead instead of follow the visual stuff. Good amount of fan service (for those of you who are into that). It's true that I couldn't figure out what was going on or who is who in this episode and to tell you the truth, I hope it stays the same with the rest of the show :) The reason is that I am hooked on surreal stuff in general, and anime in particular, and the less I know about it and the more bizarre the plot, the better. It's also true that it has a strong Japanese feeling to it and might not be liked by the general public, but the bizarreness more than compensates for that. My only concern so far is that the plot will suddenly and very soon offer an easy to digest explanation about all you don't understand and if they take away the surreal element, I am not sure there is anything left to keep me interested. So if you like weird anime which leaves you wondering what exactly you saw, and some pretty animation, you might want to give this one a try. Obviously that's not what bitem_e likes in a show :) But definitely not avoid, at least for now. As a whole, Touka Gettan is one of the big "?"s for 2007, I sincerely hope it proves enjoyable since good animes aren't exactly plentiful at the moment ...

Unevaluated Stretch [series:1572#628]
(One episode watched):

WTF? Again, I went into this new series having no idea what to expect, and my first impression was that it might be set in the distant past--until somebody whipped out a cellphone (that could actually be a great joke, come to think of it). Supernatural elements, magic, teleportation, troubled people, violence, reincarnation, and a touch of SD comedy(!?)--I don't know what to make of it. This is clearly the sort of show that will demand a lot of concentration in order to keep track of what's going on--either that, or it's a mess that never will make sense. Still, I couldn't help being somewhat intrigued. I doubt if Touka Gettan will ever be R1 licensed--it's way too Japanese to appeal to many westerners.

P.S: Ah, so it runs backwards; that might be interesting. Or again, it might just leave me scratching my head. For the time being, however, I chose to pass on this one.

right, so after watching Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou: Tou, i decided to give this one another try, seeing as how both seem to like the non-linear storytelling thing. however, this series is SO much harder to understand than Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou: Tou seeing as how the there are so many more characters to keep track of. i'll probably have to watch a couple more times before i actually CLEARLY understand anything and recognize everyone. *sigh. but there seems to actually be a plot, so i suppose i'll see it through. the humor is actually pretty good, so that's a bonus. and of course the artwork is still gorgeous. the magic is pretty cool. the fanservice and ecchi is it? i could really do without but i guess that would be asking for too much. heh. and touka? are we sure he's a guy? seriously.

and...is the story going backwards...??

anyway, TBC.

edited to say: well, it's been confirmed, my first impression was right, the first episode was an epilogue. the series runs chronologically backwards. so..i will be waiting for the full series before continuing, and watching it in chronological order.
