Unico the Unicorn has the amazing power to make anyone he meets happy. Whether it`s because of his personality or the powers of his horn, no one knows. However, the gods become jealous of Unico, thinking that only gods should be able to decide or let people be happy or not. Unico is banished to the Hill of Oblivion, and the West Wind is ordered to take him there. She can`t stand giving this fate to an innocent like Unico, so Unico`s adventures begin, as the West Wind takes him from one place and time to the next, in a never-ending journey to escape the wrath of the gods. In this adventure, Unico meets Beezel a devil child and then Katy (Chao), a cat who wants to be a witch! Can he become friends with them?

Clearly, Unico was made in mind for younger audiences considering its cute-looking character designs of Unico and a few others, its simple and light-hearted plot and the antics and behavior of the cast. The anime has its tense moments with Unico in some dangerous moments thanks to the meddling of the gods and a baddie he confronts at the end of the movie, but is about on par with a regular Disney animated movie in the scares it will give kids. Otherwise, the movie is mostly focused on Unico helping and gaining a couple new friends and confronting enemies that threaten him and said friends. Osamu Tezuka's handiwork is apparent in the designs of characters with the title's drawing style (some characters having ridiculous nose sizes), which is quite outdated for modern standards and beyond one animated sequence at the end of the movie (Unico against the true form of the mentioned baddie), there isn't much remarkable in the visual department here. Otherwise, not much else to say. The film would likely be worth a look if you're a Tezuka fan, have interest in older anime titles or are looking for a family-friendly film for your kids to check out.
