Even though I haven't even finished watching the original series, I feel I ought to commend CGG Galaxy as a clever and witty show which I highly recommend. This is all the more surprising since this is largely an animated commercial for Japan's Crane Game industry. The ads play a small part at the very end, and it can be enlightening to hear how it's somehow possible to play (virtual?) Crane Games from your cellphone nowadays. They usually take the form of an omake segment after the credits (which feature the aptly titled song "Don't call me a loser"), and are often funny themselves. I rewatched some episodes of season one, and noticed that Galaxy is a considerably more sophisticated show. The characters seem to have grown and expanded. Even the girls of Dark Cherry are distinctly likeable. Galaxy was upgraded from around five minutes per episode back then to 13, presumably because people had noticed that it was a fun show and wanted more. In episode six the girls of Dark Cherry decide to pay a secret visit to earth; in episode seven they search for new forms of employment after becoming demoralized. Instead of the usual lame jokes these sub-plots are used to stir things up and place the girls in odd situations which are fun. I was surprised to learn that the Dark Cherry girls are in fact aliens from another planet, not humans. Then they take a drastic step as they try to flee from the Idol industry. Some shows just know how to stay fresh and be fun. A good joke is a good joke, and doesn't rely entirely on being set up well. I don't know if this would work in 23 minute format, but I wish the makers of anime which aren't advertising anything would do as good a job as the ones behind CGG Galaxy do. I thought the climax in episode 11 was a little disappointing, however. Neither as funny as previous episodes (if the idea was humor as usual) nor all that exciting (if that was what the makers were trying to do). I can only wonder what was going on. Not a disaster, but not what previous episodes had me expecting either. Episode twelve was more like usual and teased us with the possibility of yet another season of CGG. I always looked forward to new episodes of Galaxy and would gladly watch yet another incarnation. This was a show which didn't take itself too seriously and just knew how to be fun. As the credits for the final episode ran, I couldn't help noticing that I had a warm feeling for this show and sort of regretted that it was over--that doesn't happen often.
