Geez, this was a mess. Even though Gyo is well-animated with plenty of vivid detail in its settings, subdued color tones matching well with its horror theme and having well-animated sequences of the bizarre walking fishes wrecking havoc in Tokyo, this feels like a dumbed-down story. Characters aren't well fleshed-out and are quite shallow, some of them not even having any role to play in Gyo besides being a victim to the walking fish threat. Because of the shallow character depth, I could care less about whatever concerns Kaori had over the well being of her boyfriend, Tadashi. Occasions of sex, nudity, graphic violence and grotesque moments with human corpses are crutches to cover up weak plotting and lazy storytelling. Some moments late in the movie's run are a bit on the mind-numbing side with how the behavior of some characters or the mood of certain scenes are set up in comparison to the failed attempts of grotesque horror that the movie was trying to pull off in earlier scenes. In simple words, Gyo is comparable to the horrible quality you can find in the bad sequels of horror film franchises like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Anyone going into this film thinking ufotable has animated anything like recent gems Kara no Kyoukai and Fate/Zero will regret those thoughts with the title's shallow characters, bad plotting and excessive graphic content.
