Haruhi Fujioka is a poor commoner who was admited to the prestigous Ohran high school. This is rare as Ohran only allows the rich and the famous to attend, but Haruhi is the #1 student in Japan and was admitted nevertheless. During assembly Haruhi goes into the empty 3rd music room and stumbles upon the Ohran Host Club, a club where guys live to serve girls (Mostly friendship and conversation). Trying to leave, Haruhi bumps into a 8 million yen ($80,000) vase and breaks it. The host club realizes that Haruhi doesn't have any money (as this person can't even afford the school uniform) so they make Haruhi work off the debt as a slave to the host club.

Haruhi has to get 1000 girls to request a personal audience in order for the debt to be paid. But there are pitfalls such as a princess who is very jealous and the club president who keeps trying to get Haruhi in the strangest poses...

The Pros: Ouran Host Club is an anime series that pokes fun of many of the elements commonly found in shoujo-themed anime and manga. It also makes some jabs at referencing aspects of otaku fandom such as dating sims and anime. The Host Club members, with exception to Haruhi, take after specific character archetypes of shoujo anime for their roles. These are guys who know how attractive they are and love to benefit off of the attention the girls give them. Haruhi is a fresh character to see in this anime being one who is oblivious to traditional gender roles thus resulting in some of the show’s hilarity as the Host Club occasionally try forcing her to express her femininity more. Outside of the show’s comedy, the show gives some depth to the characters exploring their past hardships before joining up and forming the Host Club. Some of these back-stories are serious, others can be just as silly as the comedy commonly found in the series. In terms of animation, Ouran Host Club features brightly-colored animation with a decent amount of detail put into designing the characters and settings. The bright colors go well with the elegant atmosphere of the Ouran High School.

The Cons: The parodying of cliches and character types in an anime like Ouran Host Club is nothing new in anime as past titles like Excel Saga and Furi Kuri have parodied specific anime genres. In addition, the ending to the series felt open ended as nothing really changed with the characters at the end of the series.

Facts on the Series:

-Based on the manga made by Bisco Hatori, which is still ongoing in Japan and is currently licensed in America by Viz Media.

-The anime proved to be one of 2006’s most popular anime in the fansub community alongside The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which led some to dub 2006 ‘the year of the Haruhis’ for fansub watchers.

All episodes watched!

ouran is probably one of the best animes i've seen. The story line is different. I won't go through the details about it since there is a lot that's said by other people. The animation is very well done. The characters are drawn beautifully and the storyline is unpredictable.(well for me) it's soo hillarious! my tummy actually hurt so much from laughing, especially Tamaki (guy with the blond hair for u folks that don't know). He looks good and all but he's such an idiot!hahaha thinking about him makes me laugh. And the twins Kaoru and Hikaru soo cheeky with their pranks, and trying to make Tamaki jealous. Theres Kyoya a very sophisticated person and also funny with his comments and "working from the shadows" LOL. There's cute little Honey he's soo cute and adorable nothing more to say. Mori, i actually think there's not much about him in the anime except in episode 23, he hardly ever speaks through out the anime. Oh...and how could i forget Haruhi the main character, very cute girl, i think she looks better as a boy tho ahahahaha. The otoro (jap food) part was funny as. AND! sorry forgot to mention the classic 'banana peel' that Tamaki always seem to stack on bahahaha! very well done! So...overall i think this anime is a buy buy buy! if you don't wanna buy it, i recommend u watch it, u'll definately want to buy it then.

I watched this series loyally from the start, but somehow for a long while not a whole lot of things to say about it stuck in my mind. After watching the hilarious episode 19 ("Lobelia! Lobelia! LOBELIA!") I had to say something. The exaggerated, gangly character designs, which remind me of the stylized characters in modern day American animation, caught my eye; they are simple yet distinctive. The OP song is fun, the ED one OK. In episode one I remember the scene of Tamaki walking in as Haruhi changed clothes was a brilliant teaser which left me wanting more. There seems to be a sub-genre of anime in Japan which invoves common folks teaching the wealthy and powerful a thing or two. Each clubmember gets an episode to his- or herself eventually. Maybe it's just me, but I find this an exhausting show to watch--perhaps because there's a lot of fast moving, sophisticated dialogue, which I continually have to pause on and carefully read (sometimes more than once) in order to get the subtle jokes which it contains (I noticed the same thing with Haruhi Suzumiya). Sometimes I find it has taken me 40 minutes to watch a single episode! But it is worth it, because the show is frequently hilarious. The series ended splendidly with a brilliant concluding episode that made complete sense (even to a westerner like myself) and left no loose ends at all--that doesn't happen often in anime. To sum up, I thought of Ohran Host Club as a show which demanded complete concentration--it couldn't just be viewed on the fly like most of the simple comedies I watch. For that reason, I tended to be reluctant to go into another episode (and took a long time to view the entire series), but once I had watched an episode, I was almost always delighted and felt I'd accomplished something big and worthwhile. For that reason, it's difficult to assign a rating to it; I started rewatching Haruhi Suzumiya almost immediately, but I'm not so eager to start this one over again. I'll go with somewhere between Buy- and Rent+ .

Sorta of a Fruits Basket remake. At first I was thinking 'If there is any Yaoi, I'm turning this off', but instead it's a funny little romp about a commoner stuck with the rich. Add a little detail that I omitted on purpose and you will understand this anime.

Still watching this. OMG this is so funny!

Episode Listing

  • 2: Haruhi has to learn how to dance at the next Host Club formal. A perfect blend of Romance and comedy. The ending was priceless!
  • 8: The crew go to a theme park to relax.
  • 9: The host club goes to the beach. The object? To find out what Haruhi is scared of. OMG Tamaki is into S&M! Hahahaha.
  • 10: Home Visit : The club goes to Haruhi's house. And Tamaki is just like Haruhi's Dad! Except for one minor detail.

More after I see more.

I just have to chime in to say that I am really enjoying the humor and whimsy of this series. If you like light hearted comedies, with a bit of perverse twist, then you probably will really enjoy this series too.

I posted (more than) a few snaps of the first episode.

The fansub title is either Ouran Host Club or Ouran High School Host Club, dependent upon which group is sourcing the release.
