Watch Stretch [series:260#628]
Ah, so "Chibi" means both superdeformed and miniaturized--I think I understand now. I read several critics' reviews of these shorts, and the consensus seemed to be that only OMG fanatics would want to buy them, since they are fairly expensive and work best being watched one or two at a time as a sort of Omake add-on to another show (I wonder what TV series these originally ran with?). I, for one, am often on the lookout for anime that is shorter than the standard 23-odd minutes to fit into the nooks and crannies of my TV viewing schedule, and these do nicely. Last night I had a DVD full of mini-goddesses standing by to be watched during the station breaks between the shows on Adult Swim. Some are more educational than humorous (history of aviation and space exploration, for example). Sometimes they end with a good laugh, and sometimes it's as if the writers just realised that they couldn't think of anything else for this one.

Watch 7 8 6 7 5 8 Devil Doll [series:260#752]
[score: 65% = Watch]
  • Drama: None (and I really mean it)
  • Comedy: High (actually not a lot else besides this one)
  • Action: Low (lots of it actually, but no fighting)
  • SciFi: High (chibi goddesses plus crazy scenarios)
  • Ecchi: None (this is kids stuff)
Very different from both the Aa! Megami-sama! OVA and the Gekijouban Aa! Megami-sama! movie. Had I not read the manga before (including the comic strips) I would have been very disappointed.
So what do we have here? Basically a burlesque version of the Goddesses plus the Gan-chan rat (Keiichi has cameo appearances now and then, and Marla the demon features in a number of episodes late in the series). None of this has anything to do with the original story. Instead, the episodes make fun of Buddha, dating sims, diets, fantasy RPGs, fishing, Game of Life, Godzilla, Japanese dialects, mountaineering, ninjas, presidential elections, railroad history, Rock'n'Roll, Sherlock Holmes, Shin Seiki Evangelion, space exploration and other topics - including their own series of course (with three completely self-referential episodes). Sometimes it helps to understand a little of the Japanese language and culture to get certain references and puns (such as the carp appearing every time when they talk about "love" which is "koi" in Japanese).
This series is as silly as you can get (except for the wonderful mood of that "rainy day" episode); I really wondered why this category was missing. But although poor Gan-Chan has to pay the bill quite frequently the episodes are surprising enough, and sometimes really funny. I marathoned the second half of the series and didn't kill a rat; then again I marathoned Roadrunner & Wile E. Coyote as well and didn't try to eat a bird afterwards...

So while this isn't quite my type of anime it is still charming and funny, and after having read the complete 29 volumes manga it was a nice add-on for me. It is just too episodic to provide a real storyline or developing characters, although some of the double episodes worked well.
Meanwhile I watched another series of this type that I like better: The Roudosu Tou Senki: Eiyuu Kishi Den has chibi trailers of 2 minutes for each episode, closely related to the original story's content but even more silly-funny as these Mini-Goddesses.

Rent Forbin [series:260#1573]
Very Cute, very loosely based on OMG.
Do not watch in one sitting. After 12 episodes of super chibi-ness you will want to go out and kill something....probably a rat.
It's cute, watch 2 or 3 at a time, but do not watch the whole thing you brain will explode. It's on par with Di Gi Charat.

Rent 8 8 6 7 7 7 AstroNerdBoy [series:260#436]
This series deals primarily with Urd, Skuld, and a rat named Gan (Gan-chan as they call him). Urd and Skuld are in chibi (mini) form in these shorts (about 8 minutes). Chibi Belldandy makes appearances here and there.

I found the first episode very funny, but after that, I found the laughs to be few. Don't get me wrong, there were laughs in all the episodes, but I guess I just missed the aspects of Urd and Skuld in their full form. It was always predictable what would happen to poor Gan-chan and predictable humor usually isn't funny.

Bottom line: cute, some humor (very funny at times), but not as good as I'd hoped. Maybe I'm just wanting another real OMG series! ;-)

Adorable. ^^ Really. The chibi style is cool, because I can never seem to master it. The first episode kind of scared me...hehe... but it's cool anyway. It's one of those shows without much plot... basically for a casual watch.

Buy 6 6 7 6 6 The Coyote [series:260#64]
Hey It's Looney Tunes meets anime what Fun. If only they would put in the Coyote. Just kidding. Actually don't let the low indivdual scores fool you these are great little short and very enjoyable. If you like the Oh my Goddess universe which I am so so on It's probbably a must buy. Every one likes Kawaii of their favorite characters. They need to put out one of these for Tenchi. Gan Chan is a great character to bring the girls in with he is very well done from a comedy point of view. hey if your looking for a light enjoyable laugh this is it.

This is a really kawaii series. Is mainly focuses on Urd with alot of appearences from Skuld some of Belldandy and the occasiomal Keiichi. Im just kind of warning you the first episode is a little freaky with the lil' Mrs. Kettle thing but this is a really good show.

Buy Robbie [series:260#192]
I can't say how much I LOVE this show. While there really isn't any constant plot this is definately of of the cutest shows I have ever seen. If you liked Oh My Goddess, you own it to yourself to get this one. The episodes are really short (about 8 min. each) but they are still really good, especially considering that this is a SD show meant to be exactly that.
Now that Pioneer will release these on DVD, there's no excuse for not seeing this great show!!!

Buy Kaitou Juliet [series:260#137]
I'm not putting numerical ratings on this one because I find it hard to evaluate the artwork on SD series. I can say, however, that these short features are hilarious! They focus mostly on Urd and Gan-chan, although Skuld comes in for some of the fun too. A "must" for anyone who likes the lighter side of Aa Megami-sama!
