Fearing disaster brought about by chaos, the people lived protected by “Lords;” those with the power of “Crests,” used to suppress the chaos. However, the Lords decided to abandon their posts and began fighting against each other secretly in war, stealing each other’s Crests to gain dominion over one another. Among these people are Siluca, a lone mage who despises the Lords, and Theo, a vagrant knight who continues his journey of training to someday liberate his homeland from tyrannical rule. They make an oath as master and retainer, with hopes of bringing reform Atlatan, the land ruled by chaos.

Record of Grancrest War is an uncommon entry for an anime as it's a medieval fantasy-adventure series, and the creator behind it may be familiar to Record of Lodoss War fans with Ryo Mizuno having created both. Focused on the efforts of Theo and Siluca to end conflict throughout the land between rival Lords, Grancrest has a solid foundation for world-building and some character development, as it devotes a good deal of focus on exploring how the power of Crests and magic influence the warfare between opposing forces throughout the series. In addition, major characters like our main duo get a good amount of focus and development with their characters as the series progresses to give them some dimension and find themselves challenged with either their personal beliefs, motives, or position in a conflict challenged at points throughout the series. The series does have its flaws as the fairly large cast leaves a number of characters underdeveloped, a number of story elements being cliches of fantasy-adventure titles in some form, the final two episodes feeling a bit rushed in their developments, and the series not necessarily breaking any new ground as an anime in any capacity. But for what it offers, Record of Grancrest War still makes for solid entertainment with its solid foundations for character focus and world building. If fantasy-adventure anime grab your interest, I'd at least recommend checking this one out at least once.
