The world seemed to have been blessed by the invention of Hapna, a highly effective pain killer with no apparent side effects. Hapna's creator, Einstein-level neuroscientist Dr. Skinner, curiously vanished just after it was released to the public. Three years later, in the year 2052, Dr. Skinner reappears but this time the news is not good. It turns out that Dr. Skinner had become dismayed by the pettiness and irresponsibility that he felt was at the heart of the human race, and he engineered Hapna to destroy it. After three years it mutates into a toxin that is 100% lethal. The Doctor estimates that in 30 days or so all of those who have taken any dose of Hapna--which is virtually everyone--will begin dying. He has given humanity a chance at survival, however: he says he has an antidote and if anyone can find him in the time that is left he will make it available to the general public. The secret organization known as Lazarus immediately attempts to recruit Axel Gilberto, a convict serving an 888 year sentence, to help it do so.

(One episode watched):

I do not like this show. I watched episode one of it because ANN recommended it, and the basic premise seemed intriguing, but Axel Gilberto's impossible agility immediately rubbed me the wrong way. It's as if the laws of physics do not apply to this man--he can effortlessly leap ten or twenty feet upwards, and fall an equal distance without sustaining any injury. He's like Houdini on steroids, and uses this ability to escape from a maximum security prison, injuring numerous guards in the process. I got the message that I was supposed to see this as extremely 'cool' and rally to his side, but he seemed like a show-off to me. And this guy is a convict after all--he's serving an 888-year sentence, so he must have done something pretty bad. But we get no idea what crimes he committed, or if he was really guilty, which leads to another problem with him: he has no personality whatsoever. You already know as much about him as I did after watching the first episode. I'd rather he be a person with no special abilities but an interesting personality who was granted a parole to search for the Doctor than the character he is. And the Lazarus team left this guy unguarded (except by an unarmed and terrified computer geek) when they finally managed to capture him? It makes no sense at all, and when you think about it the general premise doesn't make much sense either. Dr. Skinner felt the entire human race deserved to die--but he will grant it a pardon if any one person manages to 'find' him? Will finding him be a completely different task that what we assume? Is Axel Gilberto just as amazing a private detective as an acrobat (because I don't see how acrobatics will be of much use in tracking Skinner down)? And if, as it seems, Axel could have easily escaped from prison at any time, why did he wait? Why didn't any of the guards just shoot him--even he can't be faster than a speeding bullet, as long as he doesn't see the aim of the person until after the trigger is pulled. So, when you get right down to it, this show actually seems pretty weak to me. Another much-flash-and-little-substance one. Judging from the credits, it seemed to have been made specially for Cartoon Network, and the story so far seems to be taking place in the US. I recognized the name of Director Shinichiro Watanabe, of Cowboy Bebop fame, but it would seem that even having him onboard is no guarantee of true quality. The animation, music and background art are above average at least, but what I want is an interesting story with interesting characters.
