Again, I have never fully understood why magic transfixes so many people. It seems more like a sorry attempt to deny reality than something amazing to me. So, I was skeptical of this show as it revealed its premise. But the first half of the episode wound up looking a good deal better than what I had expected. The signs were that this show wasn't going to make the easy mistake of making magic itself more of a main character than Meg. On the contrary, we get to know Meg pretty thoroughly as she gets this very bad news and must decide what she will do about it. She's an orphan who was adopted by the unemotional and taciturn Miss Faust--one of the 'Seven Great Sages'--to be her apprentice. The comedy was decent, too, like how Meg tries to convince herself that this is all a joke. My thinking at this point was that I would definitely want to watch this show. Unfortunately, the second half of the episode didn't impress me so much. It was pretty easy to guess what the mysterious pink flower that a little girl who has recently lost her mother was seeking was. Meg stages a magical spectacle to comfort the girl, but again magic in and of itself doesn't thrill me. If every situation that Meg deals with in order to make people so happy that they cry is going to be about as deep and surprising as this one, I am reluctant to commit. Maybe this show will be more about magic than the main character after all. Basically, will the show be about racing to acquire an average of around three Tears of Joy per day, or will it be about Meg struggling with fear and anguish? But I suppose it was good enough that I will watch episode two. Problem is, each time I started watching episode two my interest rapidly melted away. The first time I only watched to the OP sequence before deciding to watch something else, and the second time I only made it to the station break. Basically, while Meg has some personality, I do not want to watch an endless parade of strangers with 23-minute problems. The OP sequence suggests that Meg will get assistance from three or four fellow Witches, but that doesn't intrigue me. Last updated Thursday, April 24 2025. Created Sunday, April 06 2025. |
