Apprentice witch Meg Raspberry gets an unwanted present on her 17th Birthday: Her master, Miss Faust, tells her that in one year she will die. A curse which works like a congenital disease has been placed on her, and in a year she will begin aging at a wildly exaggerated rate and will soon die. The only way to avoid this fate is if Meg collects no less than one thousand 'Tears of Joy'. "In twelve months you must acquire a thousand teardrops from people experiencing true joy" Faust explains. The odds of success are slim, and only 'a witch who can bring about miracles' has any chance of success, but Meg resolves to try. "This is the story of the miracle brought about by an inexperienced witch told she only had one year to live".

(One episode watched):

Again, I have never fully understood why magic transfixes so many people. It seems more like a sorry attempt to deny reality than something amazing to me. So, I was skeptical of this show as it revealed its premise. But the first half of the episode wound up looking a good deal better than what I had expected. The signs were that this show wasn't going to make the easy mistake of making magic itself more of a main character than Meg. On the contrary, we get to know Meg pretty thoroughly as she gets this very bad news and must decide what she will do about it. She's an orphan who was adopted by the unemotional and taciturn Miss Faust--one of the 'Seven Great Sages'--to be her apprentice. The comedy was decent, too, like how Meg tries to convince herself that this is all a joke. My thinking at this point was that I would definitely want to watch this show. Unfortunately, the second half of the episode didn't impress me so much. It was pretty easy to guess what the mysterious pink flower that a little girl who has recently lost her mother was seeking was. Meg stages a magical spectacle to comfort the girl, but again magic in and of itself doesn't thrill me. If every situation that Meg deals with in order to make people so happy that they cry is going to be about as deep and surprising as this one, I am reluctant to commit. Maybe this show will be more about magic than the main character after all. Basically, will the show be about racing to acquire an average of around three Tears of Joy per day, or will it be about Meg struggling with fear and anguish? But I suppose it was good enough that I will watch episode two.
