Life hasn't been kind to Zenos. He was born in the slums, and his dirt-poor background has denied him almost every opportunity. After an encounter with a healer, he throws himself into studying to become one and finally catches a break when an adventurer invites Zenos into his party. Zenos is thrilled—so thrilled, in fact, that he's willing to put up with his teammates treating him like garbage. They fail to appreciate his talents and ultimately kick him to the curb, claiming he's outlived his usefulness to them. Now bereft of money and out of options, Zenos decides to put his self-taught skills to use elsewhere and opens an underground clinic. Word quickly spreads about the brilliant healer working incredible magic in the city's shadowy underbelly. Even the royal palace is taking notice.

(Four episodes watched):

I copied the ANN synopsis because episode one doesn't reveal all that much of this show's premise. Instead, the makers chose to begin by introducing us to the harem of outlandish girls that gravitates around Zenos, no doubt because they consider that to be far more important. An extensive assortment of various girls is revealed to us even before we learn much of anything about Zenos himself--indeed, I initially assumed that elf-eared Lily, who lives with Zenos, would be the main character. Lily hopes to be his wife someday, and several other girls are clearly attracted to him. But I quickly got the impression that these would be shallow, uninteresting characters and basically a waste of time. I do not want to watch a bunch of girls compete to be the one who fawns over Zenos and pleases him the most. Nor were these girls funny in any way. I found myself wondering at one point what the basic conflict of this show would be--that is, what big problem needs to be addressed? Despite a fight scene and a person getting seriously injured I felt no drama or excitement whatsoever. It only took this show a couple of minutes to reveal that it was not going anywhere. Maybe the girls will assist Zenos in righting wrongs like the mistreated pink-haired slave girl in this episode, but if each wrong is about as complex and interesting as this one was, I don't want to watch any more of them. After reading the ANN synopsis, which fleshed Zenos out a good deal more than episode one did, I almost decided to watch episode two after all. But then I reminded myself of what episode one had been like.

Actually, I watched it after all. In episode two Zenos quickly attracts the five girls of his harem--the three leaders of demihuman gangs from the ghetto, the slave girl (Zenos will free her once she works off his purchase price), and the ghost of some sort who inhabits the abandoned mansion that he sets up his underground healer clinic in. In episode three Zenos puts an end to the feud between the three gangs by healing whoever gets injured and thereby making it impossible for any one gang to prevail over the others. It sounds more clever than it actually felt. As I had expected, the three gang leaders spend all of their free time hanging around at Zenos' place, expecting free meals and trying to curry his favor. Lily wishes she had the big boobs that these three do. It turns out that the Royal Order of Knights would prefer that relations between the gangs remain acrimonious because it's easier to control the demihumans that way. It seemed to me that the jokes are weak and nobody really has much of a personality except maybe the ghost woman. Zenos is already such an amazing healer that there's hardly anywhere for him to go from here; about the only semi-interesting thing about him is that he seldom heals free of charge. I guessed that there was around a 50-50 chance that I would watch episode four as well. Several weeks later I did, largely because there seemed to be a distinct shortage of isekai anime this season compared to the last one, in which all but one of the anime I watched were isekai or isekai-ish. In this episode Krishna, a star Knight of the Royal Order comes looking for this 'mediator' person who has committed the sin of bringing peace to the slum. She learns she has completely misunderstood Zenos, but the acting felt wooden and the plot simplistic. I wondered if this woman would beg to be admitted to Zenos' harem at the end, and while so far she hasn't you get the idea of how sophisticated this anime is.
