This was the second and longer Yu Yu Hakusho film. The first was only half an hour through Media Blasters as part of a Ninku-The Movie double feature. In it, the Netherworld attacks the Spirit World, and now set their sights on the human world. Botan escapes and makes it to Earth to warn Yusuke and his friends. But the Netherworld king and his cronies manage to get their foothold in the human realm thanks to a power sphere the obtain which was lying inside Botan's body. The spirit detectives then unite to stop the Netherworld in a really cool fight to the finish. Levelling up to the Dragonball Z fighting stature, this movie really delivers in action and coolness.

For those of you that haven't seen the end of the Dark Tournament (Jap. or US.)and those of you that have trouble placing where this movie takes place, it takes place AFTER the Dark Tournament. If you remember, the Winning Team gets a wish at the end. Just guess what Yusuke's team wished for... (wink-wink) Anyways... This is a pretty good movie, reduced by the fact that the new voice characters suck... The Japanese version actually sounds better... If you can understand it and if you can stand Kurama's and Hiei's voices being girls... All in all, if they chose to remake it with the original voices and "KUWABARA, NOT KURAHARA!", it might actually be an excellent experience.

Assuming this movie doesn't take place in a parallel dimension, ala Tenchi Muyo, I'm guessing it must take place after the "Rescue Yukina" adventure, because Kuwabara (actually, KuwaHara here) already has the hots for her, but before the "Dark Tournament" since Genkai is still alive. Being familiar with the TV series would be helpful here. In the opening scene, as a downpour floods the Spirit World, I immediately noticed the nice movie-quality artwork and animation (it didn't always seem to be this good throughout the film, but definitely better than I was used to from the TV episodes). The animation was especially nice during some of the fights--I loved it when Yusuke employed his patented "Shotgun!" attack. Perhaps this was the so-called high frame rate which I've been reading about. The movie did seem to kind of drag on longer than it needed to, with one fight merging in my memory into another...
My favorite line: "Take this, Hell-scum!"

This is the 2nd Yu Yu Hakusho movie and it isn't bad. The only problem is if you get the DVD, it isn't done by FUNimation and as such has a whole new English dub cast! So if you're expecting the cast you've become accustom to on Cartoon Network, you are out of luck. Also, you will need to have seen the TV series through around episode 32. Otherwise things will confuse you. If you've never seen the series, you are going to be very confused.

As to the story, Spirit World is under assault and Botan is tasked with escaping to Earth. She barely does and terribly injured as she tells Yusuke what to do. So Yusuke and company have to stop the king of the banished Netherworld from recreating their world on Earth.

Botan doesn't have a big role in this one, but Hinageshi (who has the same powers as Botan and lives on Earth) takes her place after being rescued by Yusuke. We have the standard one-on-one fights but in the end, our boys finally work together as a team to kick butt.

Bottom line: If you are a YYH fan, you'll enjoy this movie except for the new English cast (on the DVD) or not as good subtitles (again, DVD). Otherwise, this movie won't be for you.

Yuske as usual is playing hooky from school and suddendly Botan drop right in his lap to his surprise the spirit world as been flooded out and he must save it from being distroyed. The anime is not well thought out i practically predicted most of it. Its sad to know such a great anime series has such a poor movie and thats why i give this a rent.
