Yukito Urabi was a member of a bizarre cult led by his father which worships the Goddess Mitama. In the Ritual of Musubi he was assured that if he steadfastly believed in her he could survive being thrown over a cliff and into the sea in a barrel. Yukito has little faith and wishes instead that he may be reborn in a religion-free world. Sure enough, he finds himself somehow transferred to an isekai world which has no religion but instead has a strange state managed system by which people die. When he finds himself in trouble for objecting to it, he is saved--by the Goddess Mitama.

Most anime comedies make me smile at best, some make me laugh, but very few make me LOL while exclaiming Oh God! to myself. Such a show was KamiKatsu. This show knows how to be funny, and what's more puts an extraordinarily original spin on the generic isekai premise. Yukito expects to find a guild where he can enroll as an adventurer, and to learn magic, but both are unheard of in this place. Neither is using grapes to make alcoholic beverages, a skill which Yukito introduces the locals to and they are most grateful. But even genuinely funny, wacky humor can get tiring after awhile, which is why I am grateful that this show has a definite plot as well. Somehow the Magatama--a jade Yin-Yang pendant Yukito brought with him from Earth--summons Mitama to this otherwise religion-less world, and it looks like Yukito will be a missionary spreading her teachings and overturning the arbitary system of executions that exists here. So, what do you know: a genuinely funny show with a plot as well. Everything was so wild that, whereas most isekai series are terribly generic, here I had no idea where things were going. Though I got burned several times last season by shows which looked good at first glance, I would say this is the first winner of the Spring 2023 season.

I couldn't help noticing that the novelty and hilarity of episode one was greater than in subsequent episodes. The jokes in subsequent ones were OK but not uproariously funny while the pace of the plot slowed down somewhat. Or maybe once a bizarre premise is revealed it is virtually impossible to be just as radical in each succeeding episode. I couldn't think of anything to say about episode two (in which a Knight, Bertrand, comes to the village but gets a surprise from Mitama) and had a hard time remembering exactly what had happened when it was time for episode three. An 'Archon', a powerful magical fighter, is sent to investigate the village. Indeed, the powers of the Archon could be described as 'Godlike', which causes Yukito to wonder what in the world is going on with the Emperor and his Archons. I think including this element of mystery was a good idea, since the jokes and originality had fallen off a bit since the beginning. The show is still fun, just not as fun as it once was. Anyway, it would appear that Mitama can do anything if she has enough followers powering her, and Yukito recruits new ones.

Just when it seems that Yukito and Mitama and the villagers should be helpless at the hands of a fearsome Archon, a major reset occurs. Before long Yukito is in the presence of the Emperor himself, who turns out to be nothing like what we had been expecting. We learn the fairly shocking secret behind this land: This is actually earth in the distant future, and this culture was created by devotees of science who sought a stable society that would not implode among religious wars. it would seem that this show has a good deal more of a plot to it than I had been expecting.

It turns out that other religions have sprung up in addition to the worship of Mitama as different Archons scramble for power after the truth of the Empire is revealed. One is a kinky business in which believers worship by having uninhibited sex. The thought occured to me that I enjoyed this episode more than the corresponding episode of my favorite anime of the season. Yukito schemes to infiltrate this rival religion and bring it down. In episode eight we learn the story behind how it came to be founded and what ultimately becomes of it. Semi-funny and semi-intriguing, I would say. In episode nine a new opponent emerges, the Archon known as Gaia. Or is Loki the real enemy? Yukito saves the group from annihilation with an amusing trick. Nevertheless, I wish this show was a little more clever and funny than it is; it is good but not great. Some visual jokes in episode ten made me genuinely LOL, which doesn't happen often. It happens as Yukito tries to apply a popular modern-day form of entertainment to this alternate world.
