After her father lost his job in Tokyo, Himeno Toyokawa's family moved back to her late mother's hometown of Taijimi City in Gifu Prefecture. They open a new cafe, and in an effort to drum up some business Himeno displays some fancy coffee mugs made by her mother and used there. Mika Kukuri of the school pottery club recognizes them as sought-after masterpieces, which is news to Himeno who had no idea that her mother was so well respected in the profession of ceramics. Mika recruits Himeno and friend Nao-chan as new members of the club.

The characters here are not complex but they are likable and sometimes goofy. We learn a little about how to use a potter's wheel, which is educational. There's clearly some sort of link between this profession and the illness that killed Himeno's mother, but I doubt if it will be all that big of a deal. This is looking like a lightweight story that might be fun if it has some substance to it. In episode two we get a lesson on where the principal sources of ceramics in Japan are and what sorts they specialize in. Himeno struggles to come up with an idea for her first major work but a tour of the city leads her to one. It made sense and I wonder just how well she will do. Apparently for every episode there's a live-action segment about working with clay and ceramics (episode '4.1' for episode 4, for example), but these don't seem to have any subtitles. You can learn a good deal just from the animated stuff, and it is interesting if you are curious. In fact, I probably watch more for what I can learn than for whatever laughs or story the show may contain. Episode five wasn't about ceramics at all, and a little argument in episode three is about as intense as this series gets. Himeno needs another idea for an upcoming pottery contest, and since her mother was so outstanding a good deal is expected of her. But I could not feel all that much anxiety about whether she would succeed or not (of course she will). She hasn't 'earned' my support by being a complex, interesting character, so as far as I am concerned any other contestant deserves to win just as much as she does.
