While downtown, friends Ayumu Uehara and Yu Takasaki stumble upon an impromptu performance by a wannabe Idol. They are surprised to learn that this girl is a student at their school and belongs to an Idol Club there--Ayumu and Yu had had no idea that such a thing existed. Curious, they decide to check out the club--only to find that it is in the process of being disbanded. They will definitely have something to say about this.

I fear I don't really 'feel' Ayumu and Yu's determination to become idols; it hasn't been spelled out well enough. Perhaps at this point they are content to be mere fans of the idols from their school, but I still don't understand just what enthralled them so much. A fair amount of time is spent on elaborate performances, but those didn't thrill me either. What I want to see are likable characters finding a way to overcome realistic problems and attain fame; and while the girls are likable I still need to understand what motivates them. Still, it feels as if some sort of a story is coming together (I'm guessing these two girls will reinvigorate the dying Idol Club), and the previous Love Live series were OK, so I won't give up yet. In episode two we meet earth-brown haired 'Kasumin', the self-appointed new president of the School Idol Club. She had had a falling-out with the previous president, Setsuna, because Kasumin felt that being cute was the most important qualification of being an idol while Setsuna demanded an exemplary performance on stage. The whole story was still feeling rather tiresome to me; it seemed as if we still don't know the characters very well (yet more and more of them are set to appear) and the jokes are not exactly hilarious. In episode three we get Setsuna's side of the story. I didn't really understand why she blamed herself for the club's breakup, and wasn't moved by her decision to give it another try. While not terrible, this show just doesn't excite me and I think I will drop it. It seems to take the attitude that being an idol is such a cool thing that there's no need for the characters to have complex personalities and motivations themselves.
