My hopes were low for an anime about traditional Japanese spirits, but I'm glad I took a look at this one, because it turned out to be not just a comedy but a genuinely funny one. Tatami-chan has an amusing sardonic attitude and granting happiness to others is not her top priority. In episode one she meets her fellow tenants in her new apartment building, which include a ghost, a priest and the most morbid looking of them all, her landlord. All the signs are that this show will pit Tatami against modern-day citizens of Tokyo. "I've seen ghosts and monsters of all kinds" the priest tells her, "but the humans of Tokyo are beyond terrifying". For instance, we see how obnoxious citizens of Tokyo can be in the subway stations, and in particular how little patience they have. Episode four, in which Tatami tries to sing some karaoke but is continually interrupted, was fun. The staff at the karaoke parlor seem to be evil spirits of some sort. In episode six she goes to a 'mixer' with several sleazy guys who are looking for casual sex but find themselves completely outmatched. This was definitely a better than average short.
