My story ratings may not look good, but who watches Di Gi Charat for story anyway? You watch Di Gi Charat for insanity, 50 grams of sugar, buckets of paint, and uber kawaiiness put in a blender. My second favorite character appears in the summer specials, Pyocola Analogue III (Pyoko). Pyoko is so cute! I'm not sure what the hell was up with that caterpillar/butterfly (I think) thing but the episode where they remodled GAMERS was very funny. The summer themed music was very nice and was better than you would expect for a series of 4 10 minute or so episodes of uber kawaii insanity.

As much as it hurts to give a DiGi Charat series anything less than a buy, it must be done. The Summer Special is, sadly, uninspired and flat.
All of the beloved DiGi Charat cast is back, from Rabi-en-Rose to Mr. Long Hair, and the origional voice cast is back. But the Summer Special is plagued by misfired gags and too many attempts at humor that bomb.
With an origional cast as strong as DiGi Charat's, the weak new 'characters' are not only a disappointment but actually detract from the show. Digiko's new rival is hardly a rival at all, and even armed with a "mouth bazooka" and bad writing, offers no true challenge for Digiko. *NOTE* I do recommend watching the Summer Specials before the DiGi Charat Christmas Special, as the new characters are introduced here.
The animation is a step up from the original shorts, and the character designs are unchanged. The backgrounds were the usual charmingly vague style as the episodes. Even with the obviously larger budget, the animation team has stayed fairly true to the series. The individual episodes are longer than the original shorts. This detracts from them, as there isn't enough character development present in the writing to sustain the additional time.
The music is better than average, as usual for DiGi Charat, with some catchy songs and an excellent opening theme.
Overall, I may have been overly harsh on the Summer Specials. My fondness for the original short episodes has perhaps spoiled me, but I didn't feel that the Summer Specials were as good. Yeah, the animation is better and they are longer, but where's the heart? Still, I have once again focused too much on the negative, and truthfully, the Summer Specials are certainly worth watching.
