Katsugeki! Touken Ranbu
(One episode watched):|
I really wish this so-called Time Retrograde Army had turned out to be a serious organization, perhaps run by some country that is hostile to Japan in the future, that was sending believable secret agents to infiltrate 19th century politics and change history for their benefit. That would have been intriguing and worth watching. But what we got was a bunch of bizarre zombie Samurai that made little or no sense. Do these things even have brains? An 'army' implies organization and leadership, not fighting skeletons apparently designed more to scare the bejesus out of small children than anything else. These dangerous but nonsensical opponents (supernatural, perhaps?) must have been needed so that there could be sword fighting in the video game that this anime was based on, but they don't work so well in this anime. A serious, credible effort by a hostile agency to use future technology and time travel in order to warp history, via flesh and blood human beings, would be a far more credible and disturbing threat than these things were, in my opinion. And what does the TRA have to gain from screwing with history? Why are the fighters given nothing more than swords (and one pistol) if their mission is so important? And if only two men can initially be sent on this task, why is one of them a trainee? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Still, this was not a terrible show, and I like the genre of time travel, so perhaps I'll watch another episode in hopes of a semblance of an explanation of what's going on. But my hopes are not high. It seems that this show is still more video game than anime.
