Yūki Yūna wa Yūsha de Aru
I suppose a close comparison of Yuki Yuna is a Hero's plot setup would be a more idealist and lighter spin on Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) as both feature a group of middle school girls fighting mysterious enemy threats and later learning of some shocking revelations over the nature of their acquired magical powers. While the basic plot structure of Yuki Yuna mirrors that of Madoka Magica, the series still does enough to flesh out its own identity and stick out from typical magical girl titles. For one instance, the series has to be a first I've seen with an anime series that features a wheelchair-bound major character in the form of Mimori Togo as the series blends in the conveniences used to benefit her limited access to certain abilities and movements with the regular events of the series, including having a rather creative means of having her move around while in her magical girl form. Also, the series does a clever job at luring you into thinking things would not turn out as serious in its second half compared to Madoka Magica being a bit more blatant as it makes its intentions clear right from the opening minutes of its first episode. Yuki Yuna offers a good deal of fleshing out of our main female cast, though also suffers like Madoka Magica in the fact that their lead character is a bit underdeveloped compared to the other female leads. The series also has its occasional bumps in quality as some fan-pandering scenes can be found through milking typical moe and school-life gimmicks that have oversaturated TV anime in recent years and has a rather anticlimactic ending after all the problems that Yuki and the Hero Club suffered from realizing the truth surrounding their powers. In spite of its issues though, Yuki Yuna is a Hero is actually a rather good quality entry in the magical girl genre that makes its own unique identity in spite of making use of Madoka Magica's plot setup. A worthwhile recommendation if you are a magical girl anime fan.
