Gangsta follows in the footsteps of titles like Black Lagoon and Jormungand in exploring characters involved in the criminal underworld, this particular series focusing on our main pair of Worick and Nicolas serving as "Handymen" who are paid to handle jobs for both crime families and the police. For a 12 episode series, Gangsta goes into quite a bit of exploration on the criminal world within the fictional city of Ergastalum and the characters living in it as the series delves into how a number of the characters within the city are affected by the regular criminal activity and the influential criminal families that govern it. From former prostitute Alex trying to get over her former life and recovering from drug addiction to Christiano crime boss Loretta handling the pressures of being a mob boss for her young age, the series offers a great deal of depth on exploring its fairly large cast and the amount of influence that each of the four crime families in Ergastalum have.

A major element of the series involves Twilights, humans who gained superhuman attributes through taking drugs and genetically inheriting the abilities from their parents with Nicolas being one of them. The affairs of Twilights within Ergastalum are influenced by the crime families in the city who have differing positions on how to handle them from enforcing rules to keep them under control to desiring to wipe them out due to the concern of them being highly dangerous to non-Twilight members of the city populace. The presence of Twilights influence two major plot elements in the series. The first being Worick and Nicolas' relationship as the two have known each other since childhood and dealt with a rather abusive past they shared together, with Worick often having to keep Nicolas in line to keep him from getting in a frenzy during fights and overdosing on drugs. The second story element involves a group of Twilight murderers who make their presence felt in Gangsta's second half as their murder spree shakes up the rule of the crime families as these murderers are disrupting the rules set in place for Twilights. While the Twilight murderers help to create more suspense and exploration of how the crime families influence the Twilights within the city, this ongoing plot lacks a resolution as Gangsta ends rather abruptly during some major developments within the storyline that take place in its final episode.

Visually, Gangsta is among one of the better-looking titles animated for 2015 thus far featuring highly detailed scenic shots of the Ergastalum city landscape with subdued color tones that help to compliment the show's dark and violent setting. Character designs are drawn with realistic details in mind to give the show a lifelike feel and action scenes are nicely animated with fluid movement being on regular display throughout the show's run as it shows off sequences such as gun fights, Twilights leaping up to rooftops and swordplay in action from Twilights like Nicolas.

In spite of its inconclusive ending, Gangsta is still easily among one of the best titles airing this year with its excellent storytelling and characterization with exploring the lives of those living in and surviving the crime-infested streets of Ergastalum. This is a definite recommendation if you've enjoyed seeing titles like Black Lagoon and Jormungand that focus on characters involved in the criminal underworld.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3055#628]
(One episode watched):

Seedy sex and brutality--that seemed to be about all Gangsta had to offer. If the miserable prostitute Alex manages to turn her life around, that might be something uplifting to watch for; but my impression is that the wholesale violence will be the keystone of this anime. I especially hate the 'I can kill you with a sword faster than you can pull a trigger' balderdash. If that was supposed to make me think the swordsman is cool, it had the opposite effect. I see no sign of interesting characters or an interesting story here; are Morick and Nicolas any better than the thugs they kill? Just because you kill bad people doesn't make you a good one. I didn't expect a show that went by the name of 'Gangsta' to be very good, and sure enough it wasn't.
