(Two episodes watched):

Based on the original Idolm@ster, which I recalled as being a marginal show with a cast too large to keep track of, I had low expectations for this anime. But while watching episode one I soon found myself wondering if there was really any link between the two at all, because this one seems to be about the recruiting of an all-new and much smaller group. The strange 'Producer' (that's all we know about his name), who is an odd man but seems to be harmless, was a fun touch which drew me into the show somewhat. Whereas the original series never really focused on any one person (IIRC), here Uzuki and Rin, the first two candidates for the group, get some development and I wonder what will become of them. The theme of girls longing to be Cinderella-like Princesses, complete with Prince and castle, seemed kind of childish but the characters each seem to have a brain in their heads. In spite of the low expectations I started with, at the end my feeling was that this show wasn't all that bad at all, and I wouldn't mind watching some more.

...and episode two quickly quashed my hopes that this would be an interesting Idol series. It will indeed be about a big, fourteen-girl group, which suggests that again no single person will get enough development for me to care much about what becomes of her. Instead, the show seems to be relying on the infatuation with Idols that people in Japan have, and the fact that just as any show with mecha, fanservice, or magical girls would automatically draw a modest number of viewers (whether it was above average or not) likewise a show about Idols should do OK. But Idols alone don't particularly interest me, so I think I will pass on Cinderella Girls.
