Matsuoka Rin and Nanase Haruka (this is a group of boys who all happen to have feminine-sounding names) were once relay partners in a swimming club. But Rin went to Australia to pursue swimming as a profession, and his friends lost interest in competition swimming. Now Rin is back, and it's just possible that their enthusiasm may be revived. But first he will have to make friends with Nanase again.

12 episodes(?); the title "Free" may be referring to "freestyle swimming".

Guess the best way I can think of this title is "K-ON! with attractive guys and swimming". This is a slight step up from the mentioned moeblob title in quality as there is at least an ongoing plot focusing around the tense and strained relationship between Haruka and Rin getting focused on and explored. Beyond that, the majority of the characters in the series either fill stock archetypes or just exist to fill cast space for the swimming premise as this is typical slice-of-life fare, but with some light drama tossed into the mix. Like many of Kyoto Animation's works, Free is excellently animated with quite a bit of emphasis on the muscular detail of the male swimmers and fluid movement shown off nicely during swimming scenes. Otherwise, it would seem Free is yet another title created just to appeal to a series demographic and whose rampant popularity I don't understand in the same vain of K-ON!. Don't plan on hopping into later installments of the franchise anytime soon, if ever.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2752#628]
(One episode watched):

This is a difficult show to review, because there's nothing seriously wrong with it, yet it doesn't pique my interest all that much. I'm not into swimming as a sport all that much, so any show that was going to engage me in that topic would have to be really outstanding, and so far I'm not seeing that here. Maybe the characters haven't been given enough depth. These are extremely buffed guys, so maybe this show was meant to attract female teen viewers. Perhaps I'll watch another episode to see if anything intriguing happens, perhaps not.
