Legend of the Forest is a homage to the medium of animation depicted through its story of a flying squirrel and other woodland creatures trying to halt man's efforts at destroying their forest home. The movie is divided up into two halves with the first focused on said flying squirrel and the second half focused on a group of elves. The notable element of the movie is how its animation changes progressively through the differing stages that the medium developed in with hand-drawn stills, black and white cartoons, color and then the use of digital art via computers. From an artistic standpoint, it's quite the unique sight as animation quality and movement progressively improve throughout the differing styles employed as its plot builds up. The movie even has a solid orchestral score to accompany its scenes.

Beyond its presentation, Legend of the Forest's plot is rather bare bones as it focuses first on the flying squirrel fending for itself after being thought dead by its parents and then seeking revenge on the human who keeps chopping down the trees that were his home. This leads the movie to take on a pro-environmental stance which, while commendable, is much more preachy and formulaic here compared to the subtle and unique jabs Tezuka did in his work on Push.

So overall, Legend of the Forest is a bit of a mixed bag here. While its presentation is commendable with the differing stages of animation it employs throughout its run, the movie's efforts to paint a pro-environmental moral are more preachy than worthwhile here. Still, it is worth a look if you are either an animation enthusiast or Tezuka fan.
