Before I tackle what I did enjoy out of this, I might as well address my issues with the series. A good chunk of the comedy for this relies on the eccentric quirks of many of the Sakurasou residents to carry it along and these habits tend to either give one the impression that this baby will be typical fare for a rom-com or the traits in question border on obnoxious or absurd, notably Mashiro's ridiculous lack of common sense and Misaki's "genki gal" archetype. It also doesn't break any new ground for a rom-com as Sakurasou milks the typical character types and cliches of the genre, as well as the series usually getting overbearing with the drama it delivers with major developments in its run. Still if you can endure the series long enough, you will come to see that Sakurasou has more to offer up with its story thanks to the problems facing its cast. Many of the residents at the dormitory are outcasts of the school despite their talents and each find themselves struggling to overcome their own personal ordeals as a result of whichever talent they have. Some of the residents are struggling to be successful at whatever medium they would like to be involved with, while others are talented as such where it is easy for them to get by while oblivious to how envious others may perceive them. These struggles are believable and relatable as there are points in life where one can find themselves frustrated with setbacks to their goals and may take their frustrations out on someone they know who would be more talented than them. Each resident, including Sorata over time, comes to rely on one another for emotional support in their struggles and even develop romantic interests throughout the show's run and said feelings are also genuine despite the show's occasional slipping into melodramatics. While not groundbreaking in any way, Pet Girl of Sakurasou still carries some rather solid character exploration and chemistry in regards to the challenges of gaining fame and acceptance in spite of having an introduction that would have you assume it would be typical rom-com fare. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but the series it least offers something to connect with beyond dabbling into the normal rom-com antics. Last updated Thursday, February 12 2015. Pet Girl of Sakurasou is a romantic comedy-drama focused on our male lead, Sorata, forced to take residence at a school dormitory of eccentric students skilled in different talents. Upon becoming part of Sakurasou, Sorata has to wind up caring for a female resident named Mashiro Shina who is a world-renowned artist having a completely ridiculous lack of common sense as such where she does not understand basic things such as dressing herself and appropriate social interaction.||||||||

This started off looking like just a romp, but has developed some real dramatic elements. Not that it doesn't have its share of silly situations, but most of the issues that come up are realistic ones the characters have to work through, and the protagonists seem to be evolving to handle them.

While nothing about this show strikes me as terribly wrong, nothing much catches my attention and urges me to watch, either. We have the usual cast of the wacko girl, the shameless teacher, the Casanova guy, the cute but apathetic girl, etc. In other words, standard stereotypes that we've seen countless times before. The 'weirdo school' premise doesn't seem inherently interesting either. Nothing worth taking notes about struck me as I watched. 'Hurry up and deliver something of interest or be over with' I was thinking. Ultimately, it just was over. Last updated Friday, October 19 2012. Created Friday, October 19 2012. |
