In Enoshima, Yuki is a high school student who's never been good at making real friends thanks to his abnormally poor communication skills. Haru is the self-styled alien who decides to teach Yuki to fish. Natsuki is an irritable born-and-raised local. Akira is the mysterious Indian who watches them all from a distance. These four meet, fish, and find big adventures on their little island.

Another slice-of-life comedy? Great! (and I mean that sarcastically)

Tsuritama appears to attempt making itself different by focusing its premise on fishing with attempted efforts at comedy tossed into the mix with the bizarre quirks of two of the major male leads in this series (one claiming to be an alien, the other appearing to be a secret agent who has a pet duck). While I'll give the series credit that it does take its fishing premise fairly seriously at points in its first half, it still suffers from many of the pitfalls you would find in a slice-of-life title. The characters are mostly simple in personality and depth which can limit how attached you get to them and the comedy will either make or break your enjoyment of the show throughout its run. Adding to the issues with the series, Tsuritama attempts to create more serious developments in its second half with an alien menace that the four leads have to defeat with their fishing skills (this, I kid not on). But due to the limited depth on these characters and the series still putting a good amount of emphasis on featuring bizarre comedy, the seriousness failed to pack much of a punch.

Overall, Tsuritama doesn't feel much different from many other slice-of-life titles I've seen in the past few years that rely too heavily on a gimmick, simple characters and/ or bizarre comedy to hook in fans. You'll either be liking or hating this series.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2561#628]
(Two episodes watched):

The synopsis above hardly gives a hint of just how bizarre Tsuritama is. The only keywords ANN listed were 'Aliens' and 'fishing', but there is infinitely more to this show than that. There's Yuki, who seems to feel like he is drowning when the attention of other people is on him--either that or he is aware of some parallel universe where he really is drowning. There's what appears to be a goldfish which can psychically communicate with it's owner. I don't want to give too much away, so suffice to say that this is one bizarre show that might make the most sense to someone who is high. As for me, the nonsensical nature of this show seemed to limit the amount of entertainment that I could derive from it. I just don't have the damndest idea of what's going on, so I can't say what's definitely funny and what isn't. Will some sort of understandable plot come together, or will the series as a whole be a mish-mash of absurd bits and pieces? I have no idea. I can't really say that I have gotten to know any of the characters all that well. I must watch at least one more episode, but if Tsuritama never makes much sense I doubt if I will bother to watch it.

'Fishing' really does play an important part, because the aliens need a certain fish to return to their planet--no, I'm not making this up myself. They are armed with squirtguns which shoot some sort of brainwashing fluid. Again, Tsuritama is more weird than funny. I downloaded and converted a third episode, but somehow I find that I really don't want to watch it. There are funny shows and there are nonsensical ones, and sometimes the two groups overlap. But Tsuritama is just nonsensical without being funny. In fact, it almost grates on me. There is little to laugh at and the story makes little sense. Tsuritama strikes me as a missed opportunity, since most shows don't even dare to do much that is unconventional. But just being weird doesn't make it entertaining.
