The part that a forcibly-turned-into-a-female male has sex with a male gives me creep. But it's not the point. and the idea of putting out LvL like RPG is just plainly ridiculous (although easily understandble).
The main character Oliver is incredibly Kind-hearted (although he has a 2nd character deeply inside, which is extremely violent and cruel). Ohri on the other hand is the opposite of him, yet later is greatly influenced by his personality. Ohri actually is the oldest prince of a emperior on an island ruled by one of the ancient god, who is being misunderstood by most ppl. Somehow for the fairness of a certain competition among all the silblings of the king, Ohri is turned into a female and his magic power is greatly restricted. by accident Olive and Ohri met, and then later there are more company join their trip to the curse island.
Friendship, love, and human ugly and kind nature is full in this series. There are also many funny scenes to loose the actually very intense mood. Some part of this series disagrees with established social systems by telling the dark side of them.
It's worth collecting.

Gestalt is a highly enjoyable fantasy anime. I liked this series...and I'm not a D&D fanboy.
The art and character designs are spectacular (so good that it's like a slap in the face when they go slightly super deformed during funny parts), and the DVD really lets the crisp color and sharp art shine. The animation is pretty good, some slight choppiness in places, but not too bad at all. Also, Gestalt is short enough so that it ends before becoming tedious, unlike the oft compared Lodoss. The other side of that is it also ends right when it begins to get REALLY interesting.
The English language dub is excellent, as usual from Anime Works, and Gestalt is one of the few animes in which I like the dub better than the origional Japanese.
The beautifully designed cover origionally caught my eye, and I'm glad I purchased it, as Gestalt was worth picking up. Good story, great dub, and beautiful art make it worth the money.

If someone tells you something along the lines of GESTALT being the next great medieval fantasy since RECORD OF THE LODOSS WARS simply translate that to Its the latest rip off, wannabe of RECORD OF THE LODOSS WARS. Sorry, not all that interesting. It proved sort of okay for the first half when the female lead was mute but then I stopped caring because it just wasnt that good. A band of warriors from different classes with different abilities are of to some horrible and forbidden land to seek out some great questgood thing they didnt try to be original or they might have actually made a decent series. Of course, if youre some die-hard D&D/Everquest fan-boy this will be up your alley otherwise to everyone else I say AVOID.

This anime gets off to such a wonderful start! It's great to see a cleric as the central character in a fantasy story. The early parts of the story have some funny comic moments, such as the way Ohri's muteness is signfied by having her speech printed in a blue box like a video game. The character designs are attractive. The story is well-paced, with plenty of magical action in the second episode.

But then, having gotten me good and hooked ... IT ENDS! There are only two episodes. The "court intrigue" section of the plot is wrapped up pretty well, so it ends at a reasonable stopping point. However, we are still left with the larger questions regarding Olivier's spiritual quest, Ohri's exact identity, and the nature of the game these powerful beings are playing. And I really want to know the answers! (This is why I gave the series story a comparatively low rating, with a high rating for the episode story.)

Bottom line: Even with the unanswered questions, it's still well worth it for fantasy fans.
