Hoshi Wo Ou Kodomo
Much like Place Promised in Our Early Days, Hoshi wo ou Kodomo tries to present too much within its limited running time. It runs at a somewhat fast pace as it explores Asuna and Morisaki's journey through the mystical world they travel into with the former trying to know more about the origins of a mysterious boy named Shun she encountered and the latter is trying to discover a means of bringing his dead wife back to wife. Unfortunately, said fast pace and the movie's limited running time limits any time one has to know more about this world and the movie's various characters which really makes it tough to care for the situations faced by Asuna and Morisaki, as well as whatever themes the movie was trying to convey concerning death. As Devil Doll mentioned in his reviews of earlier Makoto Shinkai works, the guy appears to have a fascination with portraying long-distance relationships and for this movie, said relationships involve the personal loss of loved ones and the great lengths one would go through if they wanted to get them back. Also like Shinkai's earlier works, you can expect great quality visuals as this movie has a good number of vast and colorful shots of diverse scenery between our world and the one that is traveled into; as well as some fluid and intense battle scenes as Asuna and Morisaki go through their adventure. Still however, Shinkai trying to explore long-distance relationships with some grand sci-fi or fantasy theme doesn't really mesh too well in an OAV/ movie format and it's no wonder that 5 Centimeters Per Second has been the only worthwhile Shinkai work I care about.
