Right after starting middle school, Akari Akaza joins the Amusement Club which is composed solely by her two childhood friends, Kyouko Toshinou and Yui Funami. Chinatsu Yoshikawa, Akaza's classmate, had hoped to join the Tea Club, but becomes a member after finding out the Tea Club has disbanded. The Amusement Club, situated in the now available tea room, has no clear purpose, being free for the girls to do whatever they want.

(All episodes watched--twice):

Yuruyuri turned out to be a show which got off to a slow start (the first time around), but grew steadily on me and wound up as a favorite of mine. I started out thinking that this show might have a serious lesbian theme, what with the word 'yuri' in the title, but in fact it is a silly girls-in-school show sort of like K-On. Actually, a few of the characters do have feelings for each other, but they are played for laughs. My first impression was that surely this show would not be brilliant, but it seemed like fun and worth a watch. The quality of early episodes seemed to vary. When they were going well I enjoyed the distinct daffiness and looked forward to the next one, though in good conscience I couldn't assign Yuruyuri a preliminary rating higher than Watch+ at the time. A considerable all-girl cast came together, too many for me to keep track of the names and roles of every one of the characters. The characters seemed distinctive and interesting enough to get by; later they would endear themselves to me. Contrary to what you would expect, the girls are not fantastically well endowed. I would say that this show is notable in that it doesn't pander to male viewers with massive doses of fanservice substituting for quality in other areas, like more than a few other series do.

Instead, it is just plain funny, at least in the second half. I would say that a good deal of the humor comes not from the jokes themselves, but just from the wacky behavior of the characters. For instance, the girls decide for some reason to pair up and pretend that they are male/female dating couples. There's a hard to describe tone of humor to the show as a whole--something about it makes me want to laugh, or at least smile. Things are just lighthearted and goofy. Episode eight was especially good. This show tries different things now and then (the most obvious is the opening scene of each episode) and in general there seems to be a refreshing tone to the humor. Again, it's like the series got off to a relatively slow start but improved markedly afterwards. In fact, as I neared its end I would have said that Yuruyuri has endeared itself to me and become a long-term favorite of mine. The humor is sophisticated enough to impart a likeable personality upon each character. This is one anime comedy which I wish would be 24 episodes long rather than 12--most of the time I have become tired of a show after one season and am ready to move on to something else. A show cannot do much wrong if the viewer winds up liking the characters and feeling sorry to see them go. I'll definitely be rewatching Yuruyuri someday. With the pickings of the fall season as meager as they turned out to be, that might happen sooner than I had expected.

I finally rewatched this show in 2021 and it may be one of the rare kind which I liked even more the second time around than the first.

My favorite line: Akarin~
