Samurai Gun is set in the final years of Japan's Tokugawa shogunate era as it's focused on Ichimatsu and a number of gun-wielding assassins called Samurai Guns who are part of a resistance movement in opposition of the shogunate's control of Japan. The series is mostly focused on a series of episodic plots where Ichimatsu is on different missions for his work as a Samurai Gun in opposition to the shogunate's influence. As the anime's whole gimmick is on gun-wielding samurai, the series attempts to pass itself off as something cool and gritty with members of the shogunate being over-the-top evil in their acts as such where attractive women are often their victims to go along with their depiction as irredeemably evil and corrupt. The so-called heroes of the series, the Samurai Gun, have their own issues as the anime doesn't offer much fleshing out on them either, essentially making any care one would have for both factions in this series to be utterly pointless for the most part. The action to the series is also rife with issues due to the anime's limited animation as shortcuts are prominently used throughout this series to attempt simulating effect and this can be quite noticeable. Also adding to the issues of the show are the nice number of anachronisms found throughout Samurai Gun as technologies made in later times like electric chairs, tanks, and Tommy guns are utilized at varying points of Samurai Gun with no regard for historical accuracy. Overall, this series is a huge mess with its action, concept, characters, and historical accuracy. If you have an interest in anime inspired from Japan's feudal era period, Samurai Gun is certainly a title I wouldn't recommend tracking down. Last updated Thursday, June 07 2018. Art, Animation & Character Designs Artwork overall was dark. Dark colors, dark characters and dark backgrounds. Character designs were done pretty well except some characters looked too similar and I think it had a lot to do with the typical samurai style of the "top knot" and partially shaved head. With that said, I think it would have been better for the illustrators to have put more emphasis on the facial appearances to give them a more distinguished look. Music The OP was a pretty nice rock piece. Not bad at all. The soundtrack mostly sinister sounding, sometimes dramatic at key points made for a more or less "darker" mood.... fiting well with the artwork. Series and Episode Story An interesting blend of samurai action and guns suprisingly worked for the most part. A series with good characters, you'd think the plot would be as well. Unfortunately not. Early epsides, you get a hint of the plot and the possible direction but as it progresses, it doesn't go anywhere. Rather, by the end, it leaves you hanging with a bunch of unanswered questions. The other issue was the lack of character development. Although we do get brief flashbacks of our protagonist's background here and there. However, we get no conclusion or completion to those flashbacks. Overall, it's an interesting series but left me a bit bummed in the end. It's till worth the watch however. Here's a series with plenty of gore, slice-n-dice and samurai style gun action..... ya, guns and samurais. The concept of the more "modern" sumari, with their "modern" (for the time period), streamlined armor and other gadgets made the series an interesting watch.||||||||
