Our heroine Mari is an innocent, boy-shy, devoutly Christian young girl who's just entered a religious high school. When her best friend is kidnapped by a mysterious cult, Mari prays to the Virgin Mary for help. Instead, the Buddha shows up and tells her that she's going to be a magical girl. But not just any magical girl, mind you...none of this fuku-wearing, pink-wand-waving crap. She is presented with a sumo-style loincloth (magical, of course) and instructed to go kick bad guy butt. Being a good little Christian girl, the Buddha has to talk Mari into it, but she grudgingly agrees to bare her ass for the sake of her friend. And so Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gotaman was born! Villains beware her mighty ass of justice! Wedgies only make her stronger! Not even Darth Veda sumo can withstand her mighty posterior! (summary from ANIDB)

You might say that Butt Attack Punisher Girl was the Holy Grail of old anime parodies for me, being a show which I'd heard of years ago but had largely given up hope of ever seeing myself. And suddenly, it appeared! The yellow subtitles were reminiscent of late 80's and early 90's anime on VHS tapes, as was the visual style. Also familiar was the thoroughly messed-up academy where female students are exploited, thus demanding a super heroine to set things right. The series it most brings to mind is Kekko Kamen, what with the heroine taking on a series of freakish opponents. There's a good deal of fanservice, but it's not blatant; that is, more a matter of teasing the viewer with what might be shown than what actually is--which, paradoxically, seems much more entertaining. The one time I got a bad feeling about this show was when Saori was being brutally flogged. But for the most part it is goofy and absurd. Unfortunately, just when it is getting good, it ends abruptly. As was often the case in those days, this was clearly an unfinished series, part one of what was hoped would be a lengthy project, but which never got the go ahead to continue. I wouldn't call BAPGG brilliant, but any fan of fanservice-laden anime parodies that is worth his or her salt must watch it at least once. With such a title, how could anyone resist?

Actually, there is a concluding second half, just made by a different studio, I hear. This would be Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman R. This is flagrantly perverted in a humorous way--Oh God! The animation is cheesy, yet--or perhaps because of that--you can't help laughing, especially during the climactic fight. The Terminator parody was amusing. I consider myself to be a Gautaman fan, what with the ridiculous heroine and equally ridiculous villains that she fights. I was left thoroughly entertained, and asking myself, why don't they make stuff like this anymore?

My favorite line: "It's a little weird, our bottoms touching like this" --Mari
