I've never been a fan of "magic" series even though I've seen a few here and there. Normally I'll pick one up only if the plot and reviews are on the positive side. In this case, I simply ran out of titles to pick up and watch, thus I grabbed this one slightly begrudgingly.

Art, Animation & Character Designs
Artwork, wasn't too bad here. Details were faily ok and animation was about average. There was some nice mild lighting effects but as mentioned, mild.... very mild. Character designs were slightly better. The girls were kawaii... especially our lead role... Koyomi.

Music
The OP was pretty boring. It was a typical pop piece with female vocals. It wasn't bad but nothing original neither. Occasionally, we get to hear a nice mellow piano piece or some eerie violin.... but that's pretty much about it.

Series and Episode Story
This series was slow and somewhat boring to put it bluntly. I also have a few gripes with it. But first, I'll get to the "ok" parts that made it barely watchable.

The good points:
Some of the characters were cute.... namely Koyomi... the protagonist. Then her friend, "Kaho" was slightly kawaii as well, even with her dull personality. The plot was marginally passable even if a bit confusing.

The bad points:
The plot, even though I mentioned it was marginally passable. Well, the end of the margin is the fact that it was bland and confusing at times. For example, the last episode where Misa and Digitalis were battling it out. Misa is suppose to be a "ghostscript" and at one point, these spear-things go right through her without issues, yet the next minute, she's running around dodging them as if her life depended on it. Just didn't make much sense. No character development. Our characters for the most part are two-dimensional with a very minor detail of past events for the sake of developing the dull plot.

While the plot wasn't horrible, it was pretty linear and not a whole lot develops from beginning to end. There were slight elements of humor here and there.... as well as a bit of fan service.

Overall, it was marginally enjoyable...... very marginally. More times than not, I found myself rolling my eyes or waiting for the episodes to end. Move on.

Watch Stretch [series:1979#628]
(All episodes watched):

Another magic show, eh? That was one of the first thoughts to go through my head while watching YWGM. This opening episode uses the fairly common tactic of leaping right into a story without much of an explanation of the premise. The introduction was that "This is the story of a girl who turns all magic into metal pans"; sure enough, the only spell Koyomi can employ transforms things into pans and drops them on people's heads, which is sort of the Japanese equivalent of slipping on a banana peel. I found YWGM to be a modestly amusing show, but without any LOL jokes except perhaps the one at the very end. It was kind of tiresome, actually; the bulk of the jokes seemed barely worth the time it took to tell them. The next two episodes reinforced my first impression of a modestly amusing show without many LOL jokes. Does comedy have priority over drama? I asked that question because another impression I got was of a generally unfocused technique, which both prevents outrageously funny humor and makes the story (whatever it may be) difficult to follow. Still, I couldn't help rooting for the underdog girl Koyomi.

I really had a hard time maintaining any interest in the plot; it reminded me of music which neither rises nor falls in intensity, but just drones along monotonously. The problem seemed to be that I haven't been told enough. There are things called "daemons" (demons?) flitting about, but since I have little idea what they are I don't particularly care about them. Modern day magic which employs computer programming is a feature of Yoku WGM, but that seems little more than a joke and I don't see it going anywhere. It was hinted ("That's when it will all begin") that episode five(?) might finally explain things, but I saw little chance of an interesting story developing. I was watching just for the so-so humor.

I shouldn't be too hard on this show however, since the characters grew on me and it was modestly entertaining. I kind of hoped it wouldn't try to get intense and scary, since the plot was so confused; I think it would have worked better as a comedy about the goofy antics of Koyomi and her friends. I had thought that Koyomi would be the main character, but in the climax Misa and Yumika seem to be the stars. Episode eight tried to get fairly intense and dramatic, but the resolution seemed absurd to me. I really don't give a damn about the plot of the evil Gary Huang, I only see it as a waste of airtime which might have been spent on credible comedy instead. At the end of the episode a little omake feature was added which explained the difference between "classical" and "modern" magic--something which it seems to me should have been included back around episode two or three. Perhaps that's the problem: since I have little idea of what is possible and not possible using this sort of magic, I likewise have little idea of how much danger the characters are in, what their chances of winning are, what they need to do, etc. Thus I feel kind of apathetic. I'd need to watch at least twice to fully understand the story, and it's definitely not worth that. Still, I understood enough, and the final episode was written well enough, for me to be modestly pleased at the end. Yoku WGM as a whole seems like a show which is balancing on the dividing line between comedy and drama, hasn't got the resources to do both, but can't make up it's mind which way to go.
