(Two episodes watched):

The Twin Angels are twin sisters who can transform into a pair of crime fighting magical girls. Haruka (Red Angel) is the hot-tempered, fiery one while Aoi (Blue Angel) is quiet and reserved. Seeing that this is based on a slot machine explains some things. I didn't know that as I watched episode one, and for most of the time I wasn't sure if there was all that much special about Twin Angel as opposed to other magical girls shows. The animation was above average, but I couldn't quite tell whether this show was trying to parody other ones. "Misty Knight-sama", a Sailor Moon-like mysterious masked male hero who saves the twins when they are in a pinch, was amusing, though again I wasn't certain if he was an intentional parody of a certain character or if that relationship had come about by accident. However, in the second half there was a unusual twist. The Twins suffer a humiliating defeat of the sort which should never happen to ordinary magical girls, at least not in their very first episode. This show seemed more serious, in an adult way, than comical. Would there be enough depth and originality to make this worth watching? It was too soon to say.

The second episode, in which the Angels take stock and recover from their setback, seemed fairly predictable. I was wondering if this was really an attempt to make a more adult magical girl show or if the convenient characters from the slot machines had simply been drafted to appear in yet another generic one. I had a hard time maintaining interest during the climactic battle. I guess I would describe Twin Angel as a significantly more complex than usual mahou shoujo series (going into concepts like courage, teamwork, and love), but otherwise not particularly original. This is a shame, because a slightly naughty parody of this genre is just what we need, and the origins of the Angel characters seemed to suggest that that was what we might get.

My favorite line (so far): "Cheap people like you should just go to hell!" --Red Angel
